SLI in 2017 - Is it still terrible?

Hi guys.

With the release of the 1080ti a few days away I'm a bit stuck as to where to go with my system from here. Currently I'm running a single 1070, however with the recent addition of my Acer Predator (1440p, 144hz), I'm looking to take full advantage of my shiny new display, as my current 1070 is struggling a bit at the higher resolution with some settings turned up (i want to play with settings maxxed) Should I:

a) Sell my 1070 and invest in a 1080ti?
b) Wait for 1080ti release and purchase a second 1070 and run them in SLI?
c) Sell my 1070 and purchase a 1080 with its drop in price due to the 1080ti and SLI that with a second one further down the track....

I've been doing a lot of reading across a number of forums about SLI and single card performance and keep getting the same answers. Some believe SLI is terrible and the scaling/stuttering issues plague SLI to no end, whereas others have had no problem with SLI and have been running it for years - who see up to 70% increases in performance in some games (obviously it depends on the game). I'm aware that it's down to the developers to an extent to support SLI in their games...

However, a lot of these forum posts are from when the 10 series of Nvidia cards were first launched which made me think that by now, almost a year after release, drivers and software has been updated and optimized to work better with SLI, as well as the implementation of DX12 and so on.

Basically my question comes down to this. Is SLI still terrible? Do any of you currently run SLI and are you seeing the performance you want? What would you do in the same situation as me?

Any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

:)

Solution
SLI/CF is the same story as always: works well with some titles, has some issues with others, doesn't work at all with many titles when there is no explicit support for it in the game itself or drivers. If you want better and consistent performance without having to worry about how well titles may be supported from either end, a single faster GPU is the way to go.
