I have an Alienware Alpha R2 and it only has an HDMI 2.0 port for video.

I have been looking to upgrade my monitor and am having trouble finding monitors that support HDMI 2.0 at 144hz. So far this is one of the few I have found http://us.aoc.com/product_feature.php?id=79.

My question is: If I buy a monitor that supports 144hz through DVI-D can I simply get an HDMI to DVI-D cable to achieve 144hz?

So using the HDMI to DP conversion cable I would be able to get 144hz at 1080p?

Hello... Unless the WIKI HDMI page is not updated... remember there are different types of DATA transmission over this cable type and use (bit level/etc)... and the construction/tech and materials used will have their limits to noise rejection and interference. B / That's why "Standards" are Created... to give a ENG and Consumers a reliable, dependable, predictable use in their system and design.

But Display Port was designed as a Royalty free device for Computer Display use VS HDMI... and seems to be the way to go here?
