Recently I moved into my parents' home to finish up college. The only problem here is that the WiFi they have is horrid. I was thinking of some options to make it a bit better.

Currently, they have a NetGear R6100, and it is placed in the middle of the home. As it stands the router can barely send a reliable signal to the ends of the home and into the backyard. Which is about 30~50 feet each way, one side of the house being the master bedroom and garage, and the other side being bedrooms and living room. The home overall being near 3000sqft and single story.

Since I am going to be working on personal projects that involve online gaming, broadcasting, and file transfers. I also might need to try to just get a wired connection into my bedroom.

At first, I was thinking of getting Google wifi (or any other mesh network) and just have my computer connected directly to one of the nodes that would be on the side of the house I reside on. Or just having the modem be on this side of the house and have the Google WiFi carry the signal across the house.

The other idea was to just find and pick up a more powerful router that can is more suitable to send a reliable signal across the home and can be configured to allocate bandwidth. If I go with this I would also probably have to pick up a more reliable wifi card as well so pricing will be around the same with either option.

Basically, I am not sure where to turn on this topic. I haven't really been looking into networking tech lately because I had a wired connection for so long. If anyone had any info to chime in with, in regards to which setup to go with and/or which devices to pick up or look into. It would be greatly appreciated!!

Mesh networks are ok but it depends on your priorities. The technology is not yet fully developed in the consumer space. Your better bet may be powering adapters and then a simple access point attached to it in a low coverage area. Obviously a Cat5e cable would be the best option.
wired is always best in my opinion

but when i lived in a large victorian property i had wifi problems--as drilling through all those walls to run ethernet would have been a right pain

as every single interior wall was thick brick no plasterboard/gyprock

i just made a biquad antenna

cheap and simple to make

and much much more effective than those 2db antennas that usually come on wifi cards

got a full signal through all those brick walls no problem with it

Check out https://www.open-mesh.com/. Super easy to setup and administer, and the hardware is awesome. I have one OM2P-HS on the second floor of my 2 story house and it covers everything. I even get signal (barely but still) at the end of my back yard on my half-acre property.
