Computer freezes randomly

Hello!
About one week ago my computer has been freezing at random times (Between freezing in startup from maybe functioning for max 2 hours).
I dont get a bluescreen, the computer is not restarting or anything else, it just freezes.

When this happens i can move the mouse and click. The clicks register on some programs, for example i can change from webbrowser to file manager in windows. I can close tabs, but i can't start programs or open anything. This state last for about 2-3 min. After that it's completely frozen. I can still move the mouse, but nothing else.

The freezes ONLY happens when i have my GPU plugged in.

Below is a list of things i have tried to locate the problem:
- Reset CMOS
- Update bios to latest version
- Formatting SSD and install clean windows. (Noteworthy: It froze during install with GPU plugged in)
- disabled onboard graphics
- run memtest for 10+ hours without errors.
- tried my 2 sticks of RAM separately
- reseated all hardware and cables (also cleaning the whole computer very carefully)
- tried with both dvi and hdmi cables to gpu
- tried 2 different GPUs
- tried 2 different PSU
- disconnected all I/O
- running the whole system on cardboard to rule our shorts

All above senarios makes the computer freeze. Only rescue is to unplug the gpu.
On a sidenote i'm trying the pc in safe mode now (with GPU installed) and it runs fine so far (20 min+)

Not tested:
- Different SSD, but for me it seems unlikely to cause the problem because it runs fine without gpu.
- Different MOBO. My guess at this point is that the PCI-E port is faulty. (On other threads i have read that this is highly unlikely, but i cant see any other reason)
- Different CPU

Also ran WhoCrashed, it says:
Crash dumps are enabled but no valid crash dumps have been found.

Windows Reliability Monitor reports one hardware error 2 days ago, but no more info.

The computer has been running fine for 1.5 years, then one week ago it started freezing, with no changes to the hardware.

I'm new at stuff like this, so please help me if i have missed anything or point me in the directions to what's wrong. I'm out of ideas and need you guys!

My computer:
CPU: Intel core i5 6600K
MOBO: EVGA Z170 stinger
RAM: Corsair vengeance LPX DDR4
PSU: XFX XTR 550W
GPU: Zotac GeForce GTX 970
Furthermore i have a Noctua cpu fan, 3 case fans mounted in a corsair 380T case.

Also; sorry it my text is hard to understand and the english is below average, not my first language :)

You did yourself quite a good job of finding a problem. If your system runs fine without GPU, then there are only 4 possible causes:
> Bad GPU, but you tested 2, so unlikely
> Bad PSU, but you tested 2, so unlikely
> Mobo malfunction at PCIex slot
> Bad GPU drivers. However you mention Win installation frozen, and at this point there are no drivers yet.

So, what's left? Yes, maybe it does not happen that often, but nonetheless sometime it does. It's time to check different mobo.

I just saw an article from Windows 10 that they are aware that this is happening with a new update they released. I saw somewhere it only happens for people that have SSD's and there was some fix by stopping a Microsoft app store process. That being said my computer also freezes randomly where everything just becomes unresponsive so i hit cnt+alt+Del and after maybe 20 seconds everything works again.

Update:
The computer has been running fine for 22+ hours in safe mode, with the GPU conneted. (Since i posted my original thread).
Is it really the motherboard then?
Or some strange interaction that causes the freezes? I'm just guessing now, maybe you know better?

Thanks in advance.

That would point out to driver problem or some software interference (but again, it would have not caused freeze during install). So, did you tried some older version of graphic card drivers? Do you have any additional software running that affects GPU?

Problem is the freezes occur with clean install of windows. No drivers installed, no other programs installed. And as stated above, it also occurs during install and also BEFORE install, when i try to format the SSD. (using usb-installation).

A friend told me about IRQ conflict, but i said it was a looooong time since he heard about that kind of problems. Anything to look into?

Update2:
5 minutes after i wrote my last reply the computer froze. This time in safe mode.
Turns out i just had luck that it worked for so long. Thus, safe mode does NOT stop the freezes.

Will contact EVGA to see if this is a known problem or if they recognize it at all.
Else i will just replace the motherboard.

Will reply afterwards to let you know if i was able to fix it.

Thanks for all the help!
