Hi, I got a lga775 mobo and need some help choosing between those two cpus and I have a few questions!
1) My mobo is XFX nforce 630i it actually supports Q9xxx series. Does that mean that it supports lga775's xeon too?
2)those two cpus are from the same family but x3380 is a little faster by 0.16 ghz but game-debate says that Q9650 is better for gaming! Is game-debate inaccurate or core is better than xeon in terms of gaming?
3)I know that xeon designed for servers to be operated 24/7! So would it be a good idea to buy a used one or it would be very consumed and wasted?

Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad English and please don't recommend to move to a new platform! I am broke xD

Solution
There is very little info about the mobo and I'm not finding anything about xeon support. Just play it safe and get a core 2 quad.

There isn't any 775 socket Xeons, however you can mod the motherboard socket and get a sticker you put on the underside of the processor. That Xeon does seem to perform better than the Core 2 Quad as seen here: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-X3380-vs-Intel-Core2-Quad-Q9650 and also has better value. I recommend the Xeon.

This video shows what you need to do to the motherboard socket and the CPU: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjZ9rrLkb7SAhUmKcAKHTWuCK0QtwIIJjAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DHUqBW-kq1_0&usg=AFQjCNEdvnKhoj_hcsfOlmVYygxUN0hehg&sig2=0kccyK5tHDqfUjvqeM0Lvw

Thanks for your reply! I am sure that xeon x3380 is a lga775 socket cpu so I don't need to mod anything.

1. No, the bios needs support.

2. It's inaccurate.

3. Xeon actually don't last longer. Intel/amd will use the same dies on consumer and professional cpus. Cpus tend to work for a very long time but there is no point in buying such old hardware. Why are you upgrading? What is your budget and specs?

Thanks for your time! I'm overseas student so my budget is tight. I just need to upgrade only my cpu so I don't have to change my entire platform. Now there's a question! How can I determine if my mobo does support that cpu (x3380)?

Hello my friend.
I want to do it like you do. what s the case? Did your system work? Is it successful for the game?

For those who say LGA 775 Xeons don't exist.. please do some more research. They do exist. They're little more than rebadged Core 2 Quads but can support twice as much memory on such systems.

And yes, they do work in basically any LGA 775 board that supports their C2Q counterparts. My own HP DC5800 for example now has a Xeon X3360 (equivalent of Q9550) and runs quite nicely. Much better value than the X3370 (X3380 claims to exist but have never seen one sold, if they did they would be too expensive to be worth it) however my X3360 cost me less than $20.
There are also older X32x0 series, worth the X3220 being a rebadged Q6600.
And yes, they are drop-in compatible. No mods needed here.

They are not rebadged. They use the same dies but there are some differences; parts get disabled and changes in the package. Rebadged products are technically unchanged (maybe clocks but that's it). You could say a q6600 is a rebadged q6700 but most call that binning. This may sound picky but there is a reason: They do work in most mobos that accept c2q but the issue is they don't work in them all. It's a large enough chance that when giving tech support, we need to say, the bios needs to support it.

Also if you don't mind, I'm going to close this since it's a year old. I didn't close from the last bump so the op can answer if it worked but he most likely got a c2q and he hasn't answered.
