Buying Dilemma with GTX 1060 6GB

Hey all,

My old EVGA GTX 560 Ti (1GB) finally conked out on me and I am in the market for a new GPU.

While I would love to pick up a 1070, those cards are simply out of my current budget. As such, I have been looking at the various 1060s on offer and find myself with a buying dilemma.

In particular, I have been looking at the MSI GTX 1060 Gaming X 6GB and the EVGA GTX 1060 SSC 6GB. I have been leaning toward the EVGA card because it beats the MSI (and other manufacturers) on paper, is priced at $250, and also fits in better with my case aesthetically.

My old 560 Ti served me faithfully for almost five years and I'm hoping to get a similar longevity from the 1060. For those who are interested, I'm gaming at 1600 x 900 (it's an old 20' Samsung LCD) with 8GB RAM and an i5 2500K that is overclocked to 4.2 GHz. I have a 620 Watt SeaSonic PSU and my GPU budget is $200-$265.

Can anyone who owns a EVGA GTX 1060 SSC 6GB kindly comment on the average temps the card reaches during load/gaming? I'd also love to get some benchmarks on games like the Witcher 3, Metro Last Light, Shadow of Mordor, Battlefield 1, etc. I ask because, unfortunately, there are not many reviews out there on this particular card model as the compact SC version received more attention from the gaming press.

Having read horror stories about overheating EVGA 10 series cards that were running the ACX 3.0 cooler, I am understandably concerned that the 1060 SSC might also be at risk. I also know that EVGA is planning to release their iCX cooler design for the 1060 cards later this year (H1), which is supposed to fix the overheating problem. The new SSC2 will also come with a backplate, which the currently available SSC lacks. By comparison, the MSI Gaming X does have one and is similarly priced.

I am thus torn between buying the EVGA 1060 SSC 6GB now and taking my chances on the heating front or continuing to remain stuck relying on my integrated Intel graphics, which has severely limited my gaming options until the SSC2 is released (even though it may cost a little more than $250).

Can anyone please offer me some sagely advice?

Thanks!

Can't say much about the specific model and if there are issues with it
However all I can say is that whatever is on paper doesn't matter with Pascal chips.
A cheap KFA² or Palit Jetstream performs just the same as an Asus Strix for 90$ more as with Boost 3.0 they are all boosted way beyond their boost clocks on paper.

As for the EVGA I haven't heard about heat issues with the 1060 however (I guess mainly due to the 1 fan design) they are a bit noisy compared.

That's the thing, the SSC has the two-fan cooler design, which is the same one that the 1070s and 1080s had issues with.

Still, I'm hoping that someone here who has the SSC will respond. :hello:
