suggestions before taking the OC plunge

Never overclocked a system before, feeling a twitch to toy a little.

System:
CPU: Intel Core i7 4790K @ 4.00GHz 28 °C

Ram is composed of DDR3-1866 4x8192 MB 32GB total
Manufacturer Patriot Memory
Max Bandwidth PC3-12800H (800 MHz)
Part Number 1866 CL10 Series

Motherboard : ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. GRYPHON Z87 (SOCKET 1150) 28 °C

Read the manual, and it is rather confusing how to "do it". any suggestions?

It's pretty simple, just use a Windows install you can trash while you are tinkering, until you can find a stable combination.

Raise the CPU Multiplier Ratio until things start to get unstable, then raise the voltage slightly and continue.

As you approach 42x on the CPU ratio it is likely you will have to reduce the memory controller speed, which is called the Cache Multiplier Ratio. Set it to 3-6x lower than the CPU

I like to boot to Memtest-86 to test initial stability and minimize the number of Windows reinstalls. One successful pass should be enough to get into Windows most of the time.

Once in Windows I like to run IntelBurnTest on Standard to verify the CPU settings are OK. If you tinkered with any RAM settings too, run...
Google articles, you will find some for your cpu and motherboard that should talk you through it. I'm no OC expert but my advice is do it when you have lots of time. You don't want to rush, little steps and lots of testing. Once you get into it you will find the basics easy.

What cooler and psu do you have? Very important when overclocking.

just a last message to say thank you for the quick tips pretty fun to see so many other people shared how did they performed the identical setup...

just a last image ion final speeds and temps while playing start trek on ultra graphics. very sweet thank you

Looking good! Temperatures aren't high, and although many people don't like going over 1.3v under load, if it needs that bump in voltage I'd say 45 is a fine place to stop as undoubtedly going to 46 would require a lot more.

In the olden days of FSB you could go up in a lot smaller steps than 100MHz but that also meant a lot more trial-and-error tinkering.
