So the other day I brought a gigabyte g1 gaming gtx 1060 6gb second hand and was so excited to get it up and running in my PC. I cleared my computer of the old drivers and want about installing my new card. Unfortunately when I booted up my computer all I got was a black screen, the computer wasn't displaying an image. However the card was running as both the LEDs and fans were on and running. Since then I have updated my motherboard BIOS and tested all the outputs on the back of the card but still nothing.

My specs are:
And fx 6300
Asus m5a78l-m/usb3 motherboard
8gb Corsair vengeance ram
Cm750w Corsair PSU

I am really unsure as to what the problem may be, I ran a r9 290 graphics card before this and it was fine. I spend a lot of money on this card and would be so happy if I can get it to work.

If you bought it used, did you try checking the card on the seller's system? You may want to take the newly bought card to your friends house or to a local computer store(and drop it into a system that is at least on Haswell) and see if the system boots up with display. Is the Corsair PSU the RM, RMx or the RMi unit? How old is the unit?

If the R9-290 is yet in your possession, have you tried using it in place of the GTX1060? Can you boot into BIOS with the GTX1060 in the system? It's possible that your system lacks the proper UEFI BIOS support which i why you're seeing a black screen. Speaking of black screen, you forgot to mention you OS. If it's Windows 10, did you migrate using the free upgrade path or a license key?

Unfortunately he didn't have a system to test it on as he'd sold it, I know it was silly to take it without testing but he seemed like a genuine guy. I will try to test it in a computer shop next week and see if it works.

The unit is a cm unit and around 2 years old, but as I said I've had it working fine with the r9 290 which draws much more power than the 1060.

I have tried my 290 in the system since and again I have had no problems. With the 1060 I am not able to get into the BIOS when running though the HDMI port on the card, only when running through the motherboard HDMI am I able to get into the BIOS.

As for the OS it is windows 10 and I upgraded free from Windows 7

Your motherboard must auto check then to see if there is a Pci-e graphics card in the slot.
If you can put the R9 card in and connect the extra power needed for the card.

So when you fit the GTX 1060 card and connect the six pin power required for it.
Try lifting the 1060 card up slightly towards the top of the tower case before you tighten the bracket screw tight to the case from the card.

See if it is just not a slight contact issue between the finger board of the card, and the contact pins of the Pci-e card slot.

I have tried the 1060 multiple times, including, as you said tilting the card up toward the top of the case and this doesn't make a difference.

When you say auto checking the pci-e slot what do you mean exactly?
