replaced cpu now computer doesnt boot

my motherboard: asrock z170m extreme4 https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157675&cm_re=extreme4_z170-_-13-157-675-_-Product

I replaced my i5-6600 with an i7-7700k and after putting in the 7700k it wont boot. but i put in the 6600 back in and it boots up. could it be that i got a dead cpu?

Could be a dead cpu, did it come with like any disks(normally doesnt) or manual, if so did you read it.

nah it just came with the usual booklet that shows the installation and warranty information/etc.
I also read somewhere that i might need to update my bios?

Yes bios could be reading for your old cpu instead of the new one so I think that might be the issue.

Nothing wrong with the new cpu (most likely). Flash to latest bios to support kaby lake.

The Z170 series motherboards do not natively support the Kaby Lake (Core Ix-7xxx series) processors. A BIOS update is required in order to support your new processor. You need to replace your old processor and then update to BIOS version P7.10 (or newer) before attempting to install and boot on your new processor.
