Remove platter from drive?

So i have absosutely no reason for doing this l, but lets say if i removed one of two platters from a 40GB IDE hard drive, would it still say 40GB? Say 20GB? Or would it nor work at all? I wanna know what i can expect after doing this

it will not work, the internal electronics will expect the plate to be there.
Besides that, Hard disk indsides are really sensetive to outside effects like dust and fingerprints, even opening and closing it will possibly cause it to break.
