CPU cooler spacing

Hi everyone

I was thinking about finally upgrading my CPU cooler, and all this time has been a pain in the rear to be honest, i was thinking about going air cooler like cryorig h7 or cooler master 212x, but no stock, even after months of waiting it just wont get in stock.

So finally in the end an AIO was the only option left, found a cryorig A40 AIO in stock, and ofc in my budget (prices are high compared to US prices). So here's the thing, my case is a thermaltake urban s31 and the a40 is a 240mm, people who have seen this case would know there is space to mount the fans outside of the case and inside as well (at top).

So here's my simple question, can i mount the radiator outside of the case and the fans inside?

any suggestion appreciated.

Thank You.

Solution
yes temps would still be better than the stock cooler.

Yes there should be screw holes on both sides of the rad to allow for either configuration. The screws for mounting should be long enough to hold both the fans and the rad in place with the case in between the two, if that makes sense.

I doubt that you would be able to as that would require you to remove the pipe work from the radiator of the AIO meaning you'd loose fluid etc. defeating the objective of an AIO cooler and also most likely voiding warranty.
With my AIO I mounted the rad on the inside with the fans located on the outside pulling air up through the rad.

Hi, thankyou for the fast reply.

The thermaltake s31 has some space open at top between the outside and the inside, cant i put the block and tubing from those spacing to the inside of the case?

Thank You.

If you can feed the block/tubing through a hole in the top of the case, then technically you could do what you're asking.

As long as you can properly install it in that configuration then theres no reason not to. Many tests have been carried out and show negligible performance difference between different fan/radiator configs.

Thank You both of you for the answers.

Like i said any suggestion is appreciated.

To what abaday789 said he has the rad inside and fans outside, i dont mind any way as there is a dust filter at top, i even checked on the pcpartpicker the case and the cooler was compatible, what would you suggest me to do, do you mind taking a look at the case spacing at top so you would get a better idea about it? (incase you havent).

Thank You.

I think you can. Maybe. Tho depending on how big the AIO pump is, it may not thread through the holes.

Here's some interior shots of the case, including the top.

Here's a thread with someone doing exactly what your suggesting (tho with a different cooler)

I did a similar setup in a friends NZXT Phantom 410. You pop the top off, feed the pump with hoses attached through a hole in the top and mount it to the frame. From there just screw in the fans under it, inside the case, and it should work well as a push configuration. As long as the holes in the top of the case will allow you to get the pump though it, and you have enough tubing to reach where you want to go, it should work. It' a bitch and a half to deal with and you will foul it up at least once and have to rip it all apart and start over but it should be doable.

Thanks again for the detailed post.

I checked out the links and that is exactly what i mean, like you said as long as the holes can allow me to get the pump through it, but since i don't have the a40 in my hands right now since i haven't ordered it yet, i dont know the exactly size.

to be honest i dont mind if its a pain fitting it or anything if it keeps my CPU cooler compared to the intel stock one, haha.

so should i buy it? m gonna ask the seller in the mean time if i can replace or refund if it doesnt fit xD

Thank You !!

Hi,

I asking the seller about refunding and stuff but he hasnt replied yet.

m thinking about mounting the rad inside the fans outside, but i wanted to ask does the fans have to be installed on a specific side of the radiator or any side? if any side i can install the rad inside with the tubing going downwards and the fans on the other side like abaday789 did it, a pull setup?

Thank You.

The side of the radiator you put the fans on should have no effect on performance along with whether you do a push or a pull configuration.
If having the rad on the inside of the case then a pull config will use the warmer air from inside the case to cool the radiator. Whereas in a push config cooler air will be drawn in from outside of the case and pushed through the rad. This can provide slight improvement in cooling performance but will result in warmer air being blown into your case rather than being drawn out.

I personally run a pull config to draw the air out as I prefer to have cooler air inside my case for my graphics card and motherboard cooling.

Thankyou for your answer,

Yea i would like it to pull the warm air away from the case, i mean even tho it pulling warm air, the temps would be better than the intel stock cooler right?

but my one question still remains, that the fans can be installed on the either side of the rad right? not specific side?

Thank You !!
