I am planning on building new PC and have some questions. I will be using this PC for gaming only so I will be going with Intel and 1080ti.

Firstly, should I get a 7700k or 6900k? Please ignore the price different and suggest which one should I get. I know this is a pretty easy question but here is why I am asking it here instead of just going for 6900k. I like 8 cores on 6900k but I don't like that it is a couple years old CPU and has lowe single clock perf. I want a Z270 motherboard but I tried searching on Google and did not find if it is compatible with 6900k. Can I run 6900k on Z270?

I was thinking to go with 7700k and Z270 and upgrade when Intel comes with a new 8 core CPU on new Z270 board hopefully. If I go with 6900k and X99 then i will need to upgrade both CPU and MB which I would hate to do.

Not sure if I am making sense but in short I want to build a PC now and hope to upgrade it when Intel comes with a new 6/8 core on Z270. Please advice.

yes you can run a 6900K on a z270 board wiuthout worryabout about BIOS updates like trying to get a 7700k to run on a 170 board. there really is no difference between the two and they cost roughly the same. no one knows yet if intel's next CPU's will be able to be used on 170/270 boards or not

6/8 core CPU on a 200 series chipset is not going to happen. If Intel comes out with a mainstream 6\8 core option, it will use a new chipset and possibly even a new socket.

If you're only gaming, there isn't a reason to move to a 2011 CPU.

No you can nnot run 6900k on the z270 because the socket physically has a differnet arrangment of pins.

If you just want a gaming build go with 7700k. Not all games are even taking adventage yet of 8 threads so you would be spending a premium on something you cant utilize in many games.

If you are doing video rendering, 3d modeling or anything like that which will take adventage of every thread you have then the 6900k would be the better buy.

"I don't like that it is a couple years old CPU and has lowe single clock perf."
1st - plenty of CPU's from 4 years ago can keep up with today's CPU's (Speed increases have not been huge for a while.)
2nd - With a K at the end of the CPU name you can easily overclock which will directly increase the performance while using a single core.

I'd go with the 7700K.
As you pointed out it DOES have a higher clock rate and better potential upgrade path.
Don't get hung up on the number of cores.

Great thanks .. I think I am going with 7700k then. Ryzen was a disappointment for gamers and I waited months for nothing. At least we have a competition now.

I am now debating should I go with 1080ti or wait for Vega RX. I have a feeling it will turn out to be a disappointment as well.
