My old motherboard with an i5 750 is dead, so I figured I might as well fully upgrade my pc. I have a Corsair 750w psu I can use and 16gb of DDR3 memory. I want to get a GTX 1060 and an i5 processor. I've been really out of the pc hardware loop lately, but apparently the new Intel processors require DDR4 ram. In that case, would it be best for me to get an i5 4690k instead, so I could make use of my DDR3 ram? Or can you guys suggest an alternate build for up to £500? Any help appreciated. Much thanks in advance.

GTX 1060 is kinda outta reach with that budget from what I see. RX 470 is still a pretty capable 1080p gaming card.

Thanks mate, so going with the 4690k is probably a better/cheaper idea than moving to a current gen i5 and buying ddr4 I guess?

Because it's DDR3, the best you can get is Haswell. That's fine, since IPC hasn't improved much anyways. And also, you won't be able to get a current generation i5 at 500 pounds without sacrificing something.

Maybe get a used i5-4690K?

I'm not really bothered about getting a current gen processor if there's not that much of a difference, I'd actually prefer not having to buy new ram.

Is the 4gb rx 480 good enough or should I go for the 8gb version for 1080p gaming?

The 4690 for ~178 pounds is still the better option imo if it gives room for a nice ssd. That "Z" board should make it possible to run all cores at max turbo which makes it an even nicer cpu.

Don't think the OP will still respond though, seems he already made his decision.

Thanks mate, but that price is without VAT, with VAT it goes up to £280, which is £50 more than the 4690k. Also, as Vic mentioned I've already purchased the parts. Mobo and CPU are already here, case and gpu will be arriving tomorrow.
