How can I get 120hz from laptop to monitor?

I have a dell 15 7567 laptop. (1050ti) hdmi only. I have a 165hz monitor with a DisplayPort 1.2.
Do I need to buy hdmi to dp? Will this work even though the reviews say that they can't get 120hz.

Return the monitor and buy an appropriate one with HDMI.
Trying to get converters to do above basic things is asking for trouble and a big headache. And potentially cripplingly expensive.
