[Soundcard] What to look out for (SPDIF)?

Hey guys,

I just bought a PS4 Slim (which doesn't have an optical SPDIF connection). So I started to look how I could get the sound from my PS4 slim transferred to my Computer to listen to it while still being able to sit in Teamspeak and talk with others without having to listen to it over Speakers/extra headphones connected to the PS4 Controller.

I came across a solution which leads me to connect my PS4 slim to a TV/Monitor via HDMI which has optical SPDIF which then should be connected to my Computer. Technically that should work out but I dont have an optical SPDIF connection on my motherboard and therefore would need to buy a soundcard. I came across some which list only "SPDIF OUT".
(Asus Xonar DG)

My question is now: Is SPDIF working both ways or will SPDIF OUT not work for what I have planned? Or is there another way to achieve this? My Monitor also has a headphone jack which will switch the sound output to headphones when they are connected but somehow will not switch if I connect the headphone jack via a 3.5mm x 3.5mm cable as an audio linein to my computer. Could that work and if so am I doing it wrong?

No, it doesn't work both ways and the SPDIF out port s as it state outputting audio from that port, you're going to need an Optical input. Soundcards with optical inputs don't exactly come cheap, ranging anywhere between 113USD-170USD while some are higher than that figure.

Instead of going through so much trouble, I think you should have the audio output separately to their own respective headset/speakers.

This article might even be worth a read but it doesn't aid in getting the audio to your desktop.

Might be worth while to pass on your full system's specs inclusive of your OS and the monitor/dislpay.

My Specs:

CPU: i5-4690k
GPU Nvidia Geforce GTX 970
Mainboard: Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H
OS: Win10 Anniversary Update 64 Bit

Headset: Sennheiser Game One

Main Monitor: BenQ GL2250 (not connected to the PS4)
Second Monitor: hisense ltdm24k21seu (currently connected via HDMI, but without an optical output)
Couldn't find a technical data sheet in english sorry. Would have considered buying a 3rd Monitor with optical output because I currently have none or would buy a soundcard with optical audio in and a splitter depending on which one is easier/cheaper/more functional.

I hope that is all if I missed something I will add it
