Hi Everyone,

Need some information regarding PCIe slot.

What happen when x8 card slot into x4 slot. Can it work?

Is there any implication if x8 card is slot it x4 card?

The motherboard i'm using is Asus Z170-WS

Thank you.

Best Regards
Khairul

Square peg in a round hole principle.
x8 slot card into x4 slot is a no no, it wouldn't even fit.
x4 slot card will work in x8 and x16.
x1 slot card will work in all other PCIe slots.
However, there are some adapters that can make them work like that but is performance reducing and may mean some physical changes to mounting.

The PCIe x4 slot on the Z170-WS is open-ended so theoretically, you can put a x8 card into it and it will just work at reduced bandwidth.

Hi Elder,

Thanks for the answer. By looking at the spec of Asus Z170-WS it using Gen3 PCIe slot, which means 1 lane = 985 MB/s
if 16 lane = 16 GB/s. If 4 lane = 4 GB/s

For example if my graphic card is running x8 pcie gen 3, with total max bandwidth 3.2 GB/s does this means i can slot in the card into x4 slot?

Thank you.

I said theoretically.

You use a graphic card in your example, which exactly is an example where such scenario might not work. A graphic card may be designed to draw a certain amount of power from the PCIe slot while a PCIe x4 slot may very well wasn't designed by the MB manufacturer to supply that much power. You can see how in that scenario the graphic card would not function with the slot.
