How do i "activate" my SSD

Hello, any support would be greatly appreciated. I finished assembling a custom PC with only an SSD. I decided not to get an HDD as i got a good deal on the 500 GB SSD drive. I intend to use it as both the boot drive for Windows and the data drive. Searching around i read many people do this, but correct me if I'm wrong. Before installing windows, i could see that the SSD is disabled under HotPlug in the BIOS screen.

My SSD came with a serial number and "activation instructions":
1. Go to www.crucial.com/acronis
2. Download the software
3. Run the .exe file and follow instructions
4. enter serial number

I just installed windows using a Bootable USB. I was able to select the 500 GB SSD drive (the only option) for the installation directory. Finishes installing, restarts and just goes to a black screen with a flashing cursor (same as before installing windows). Restarted PC and tried selecting the "Crucial MX300 525GB" as the boot device. Same black screen. Again, I am assuming it's because it's "deactivated" and doesn't boot.

Apparently Acronis is a cloning software, and the product directs me to go there to download software to "activate" the SSD. Does that mean that installing Windows on an HDD and cloning from it is the only option? I would prefer not to shell out another $100 for an HDD just for that purpose.

Relevant Specs:
MSI Z170-A PRO motherboard.
Crucial MX300 525GB M.2 (2280) Internal Solid State Drive

Depending what you are using it for 500GB can fill up quick. I have a 3TB HDD for storage and a 512GB SSD for boot.

Hotplug is just an option that has to do with disconnecting a drive under power.

The activation instructions are just for the Acronis program which is just a backup program. It is not needed.

Reset the BIOS to defaults and try to boot.

Ok, I got everything working. Put USB back in initial boot order and it started up fine.
Here's where i messed up: After initial boot into BIOS, I saw the SSD "disabled" under HotPlug and M.2 Genie grayed out, as well as the "activation" instructions that came with my SSD. I assumed that it needed some sort of driver and didn't even bother to look up what HotPlug or M.2 Genie were. I also didn't see the tiny text on the tiny slip of paper saying the activation (Acronis) was for moving hard drive.
This was the first time I assembled a PC, or even used an SSD. I've been working with a Mac for the past 6 years.

Thanks harrisjb78!
