So I was making a list of PC components I want to buy. PC Part Picker told me that I need to update the BIOS on the motherboard in order for the CPU to work properly. I how do I update the bios? And is it necessary?

Link to the build:

Thank you in advance!

In order to update the BIOS on a motherboard, you will need to have a natively compatible processor (Sky Lake) installed. With that processor installed, you would then follow the instructions for your motherboard on updating the BIOS for the newer processor (Kaby Lake). You could then remove the Sky Lake processor and install the Kaby Lake processor.

In order to avoid having to purchase two processors, you would be better served by purchasing a motherboard that natively supports the Kaby Lake processors (B250/H270/Z270 chip sets).

Heyo Pandro

Yes. You'll have to BIOS-update that motherboard. The mobo you've chosen was made for skylake, and you chosen a kabylake CPU. They're basically identical, but the skylake mobo's will have to get a BIOS-update to work properly with kabylake. If you don't feel like doing this, just get something like the ASRock H270M Pro4 or ASRock B250M-HDV.

Cheers
