Hi All,
Bit of a noob so I hope I'm asking the right question in the right section.

I'm looking to get a refurbished Dell with the spec below. My first question is can this computer handle those upgrades and will it work well.

I don't do a lot of gaming but I do graphic/web design a lot and want to be able to run the Adobe Photoshop/Dreamweaver/Illustrater programs along with multiple browser windows while streaming music or video.

Dell OptiPlex 7010 SFF
i5-3470 16GB
128GB SSD
GeForce GT 710 1GB DDR3

Thanks for any help/advice on this

The SFF version has four ram slots that accept DDR3 ram at a maximum frequency of 1600MHz @ 1.5v. So if you want 16GB's of ram, you should pick out a 4x4GB DDR3 1600MHz 1.5v kit.

The manual states that the 7010 has a Sandy Bridge processor in it and a motherbaord capable of the platform, it also means that the platform could accept the Ivy Bridge processor part however I would ask you to make sure your BIOS is up to date.

Regarding the GPU, we;re going to have to pull on the PSU's specs. It's currently rated at delivering a maximum of 240W and if the unit has seen a number of years under service, then that maximum output has been greatly reduced. Why did I mention this? The entire system with a GT710 will draw 300W of power so you're unfortunately not going to be able to run the GPU of your choice.

If you're thinking a PSU change might solve it, think again, the PSU and much of the components used with the OptiPlex's are proprietary and as such only a specific part will go in. There aren't aftermarket(higher spec'd) parts to date that will go within the SFF/USFF OptiPlex's.

You can pick up an SSD caddy and use the SSD in place of the ODD.

My 2 cents.

Wow! Thanks for such a detailed reply!!
So if I run it on this spec would it give me problems or would it just not use the gpu to its full potential?
Should I downgrade the gpu?
