Should I upgrade from a 980 ti to 1080 since they are $499, or wait for 1080 ti price drop?

I know this question has been asked in some form or another, but I'm wondering more about what the price of the 1080 ti will even be once the other manufactures like msi release their versions.

I have the money for a 1080 right now since it has dropped to $499. The current price of the 1080 ti is too much, but will it come down any time soon, and if so, should I wait for that? I didn't want to spend more than $500, but if the 1080 ti was say...$600, I'd go for that for sure.

Just curious what everyone thinks.

Thanks

Wait. The GTX 980 Ti isn't all that far behind the GTX 1080 from a performance perspective. Unless you want to drop power consumption by 10-15%, then stick with the GPU you already have and look toward the GTX 1080 Ti down the road. Your better option might be to look toward the used market for a second GTX 980 Ti and run the pair in SLI. Of course your PSU will need to be up for the task...

Cool, and yeah I only have a 1080p monitor, but looking to get a 4k monitor and wanted a card that would be good for playing 2 and 4k resolution. Not looking for the ultimate 4k card, mainly 1440p, but want the 4k monitor so that I have the option. For instance, I can run plenty of games in 1440p with the 980, and some are even playable in 4k with only a few graphics tweaks. I just want a card that will be a bit more future proof and also allow me to play in 4k without having to settle for 30 fps.

Perhaps I should spend the money on a new monitor instead???

thanks

I should also add, that I just RMA'd my 980 ti. It arrives to MSI on thursday so I'll probably be without it for a while. My old 7870 is doing surprisingly well in getting me by for now, but being that I have the money to buy the $499 1080 from MSI right now and get it by the weekend, I'm really tempted to just get it and sell the 980 ti when it gets back. Pretty torn on what to do. I can definitely live with the 7870 for a few more weeks I suppose...

well if you look at the 2 cards like from here is the price of a new 1080 worth it the scores are not that far off over all ?

[use a non overcklocked cpu [non ''K'' ] so cpu overclocking don't have a affect on GPU scores ]

''Number of GPUs = ''1''

I cant see spending another 500+ $$ for them slight gains ??

then in my opinion what if I could overclock my 980ti [at 1350 box stock boost] to 1080 clocks of 2,114 MHz ??? if I could would be far better then a 1080 , all that higher clocking but little gain [opinion]

then the 10 series don't support as much as a 900 series on top of all that

ok, so how about this....should i say screw the gpu and stick with the 980 ti and just get a new monitor? I'm pretty tempted to just go with that since I know I can play everything in 1440p. But my real question to that would have to be, should I get a 28 inch 4k monitor, or a 32 inch 1440p monitor....or a 27 inch g-sync monitor???!!! I'm neeewww I don't know what to doooo!.....Not really, but so many choices.

Here's the thing, if I get the monitor, I'll be able to finally check out some higher resolutions with the card I have now. If I upgrade my gpu, even to the 1080 ti, I'm still stuck with a 1080p monitor for probably the next year or 2.

So if I'm stuck with a 980 ti for the next year or so, what monitor should I get that can be bought for around $500, give or take? I would obviously upgrade my gpu to whatever is a good buy at the time later down the road.

don't see why your not happy with what you got ?? it s your money and your own self gratification what ever you do it will make you happy and feel well worth it or the new wares off and then you wish you kept your old stuff and still have that money in hand ??

my monitor fails I buy a new monitor my card fails I go buy a new card I don't tend to just replace good working stuff just for the sake of doing so ..

thing is you got to do what you feel is best for you , not for me , him, or the guy down the road

seems like your falling in to the good old HYPE trap and with your cash burning a hole in your pocket [and they know it ] $$

There's an Acer Free Sync monitor 1440P monitor running like $470. (Acer - XF270HUA 27" IPS LED HD FreeSync Monitor - Black). You could get a re-certified Asus ROG Swift PG278Q for $499 on Newegg (this would be my choice)

well why a freestink monitor with a NVidia card ?? see how the hype starts up to use amd cards freestink yes, but for NVidia geestinks you need a monitor with nvidias part/ module in it for geestink its propriety / gimmick to get extra money from you

see you spend extra on that say NVidia s monitor and you end up with a AMD card its useless now and vice versa.

you know the old saying ?? ''a fool and his money are soon parted ''

anyway good luck i'll leave you to it

It's his money. I'm buying two 1080 Ti's on Friday (one is preordered, the other I'm waiting at microcenter for) and to many, that's a waste of money, but it's what I want and I work damn hard to be able to buy without any worries. So, who cares... the question was, what $500 monitors are out there that are 1440p (maybe 144hz). I honeslty think a monitor right now is a waste with the 4k 144hz monitors coming out this summer. But that wasn't the question lol.

Ok, answer me this...and maybe I should start a new thread, or search for an existing one on this topic....but exactly what resolution monitor should I be going for using a 980 ti? Like I said before, I'd like to have the option of playing in 4k for the games that I have which can be played at that resolution and at a decent frame rate. However, being that at the moment, about 90% of everything I play has to be played in no higher than 1440p for good frame rates. So if I get a 4k monitor, how will those games in 1440p look? Will they look as good as a 1440p monitor of the same size? And what if I get to a game where in order to get good fps I need to run it in 1080p? How is that shit gonna look?

Thanks in advance
