So I've bought a Dell Dimension 4600 with Linux already on it. I tried to boot from the usb only to find out minutes later that the BIOS is too old to boot from USB, and I couldn't find any BIOS updates for Linux. It doesn't want to boot from CD, even tough the CD drive works. I'm a linux noob, so I don't know much.

Solution

Even XP and 2000 are not really good for much, they are limited in security patches and browser support. Just use the Linux that was installed on the system already.
Try making another CD to boot from, if it sees the drive and you can select the CD as the default boot device, as long as the disk you have is bootable it should work. What may be an issue is if your CD is burned, the older disk drive can't read it. Or you used a DVD when the drive is CD only.

I'll try. How can I make sure my CD is bootable? I used some program to make an ISO bootable in a Windows 7 virtual machine. Also, the CD drive only says Compact disc on it.

Well I tried, it either locks up when I'm in the "Select Boot Device" menu, or flashes a Auxiliary Device Error then boots straight into Linux. Also one strange thing, the PS2 ports act strange. Mouse gets power but doesn't work, same with the keyboard.

Sounds like the computer is no good although someone did get something installed on it.

Just realised that the CD's I used weren;t burned properly, so I burned them properly. Burned Windows XP Professional 64-bit only to discover that the CPU is only 32 bit single core. Tried to burn Windows 2000 Professional but it just shows a blinking cursor. Should I even touch Windows 9x?

Too late, already formatted the drive and as we speak, windows 2000 is trying to install on the Dell. Not planning to do much on it, just play games that came around its time. Also planning on buying a GPU for it when I get it working.
