I'm building my first pc and I'm on somewhat of a budget. I bought some ram (G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory) and I wanted a certain mobo (MSI Z170A GAMING M5 ATX LGA1151) but it says it only supports ram at 2133, 2400, 2800, 3000, and 3200.

So will my motherboard support my ram and if it does, will it simply downclock it to 2400MHz?

Solution
If it can't do the 2666 using XMP, you should be able to manually tune it to 2400, or just leave it at the default 2133... either one won't hurt it or the motherboard. There is even a chance you *might* be able to dial it in at 2800, but that depends on the RAM you end up with and the fickleness of the motherboard.

Hey, sorry guys, I've actually found a different board and RAM so I believe I am good to go. But thanks for the information and I'll keep it in mind for future reference.
