Hi Guys,

I have a question about adding an additional storage drive in my new Alienware X51 R3.  I just purchased a brand new X51 from the Dell outlet (not a refurb). It has a core i5, 16 GB of dual channel DDR4 RAM, a 4GB GTX 970, and a 256 GB PCIe m.2 SSD. Coming from the factory with a fresh Windows install and all of the Alienware software I think it was down to 190 GB and after downloading 4 or 5 games I'm down to 20 GB left and I've only had it for about a week. So I obviously need to add another hard drive.

After buying the computer, buying games on Steam, a new Xbox controller, a new mouse and keyboard I'm a little short on cash. I really don't wanna spend more than $200. After checking online I can fit either a 3.5" or a 2.5" drive in there.  I should also mention I have the air cooled model NOT the water cooled K series.  So I'm not sure if heat will be an issue or not. I'm open to any and all suggestions. I know a SSD is obviously the way to go but to stay in my budget I could really only be able to afford a 500 GB SSD (probably something like a Samsung Evo) and I'm afraid that'll fill up as fast as the 250 GB drive did. My other option was a 2TB hybrid drive from Seagate or a normal 7,200 rpm WD Black. Would it be ok to keep my OS and my primary game or two on the SSD and use a normal HDD for back-up storage? Or do you think I should just stay with SSD and go with the Evo? If the normal drive is ok which would be better? They're pretty similar in price. Should I use a 2.5" drive or a 3.5" drive? Am I missing another option? I really don't wanna spend $350+ for a 1TB SSD.

Thanks again for any and/or all info. If you need anymore information from me on my end please let me know. I really appreciate everyone's time and effort.

Solution
Yes, would be a good option if that's all the space you need.
I go by Murphy's law of warehousing: " What ever empty space, it will be filled up soon".

Thanks. I found a highly rated 500gb SSD on sale for $105 which is actually cheaper than the 2TB laptop drives I was looking at (everything I read said while a regular 3.5" drive will fit it'll be tight, hot, and noisey). Do you think that would be a good option?
