Problem with two external hard drives not working correctly.

I'm having an issue with two of my external hard drives, that after a windows update not to long ago and a windows crash (due to the update) one of my externals does not work (or show up in the storage area) that I can find. The other shows up and will open, but goes extremely slow when moving files or opening.

I have run scan disk on the one drive that shows up in "This PC", and it says there are no errors or nothing is fixed. I also used a program to scan it called Advanced SystemCare to repair the drive and again no errors found. The other drive in general will not show up at all for me to do anything at all with it. I would like to save any if not all the data on it if at all possible but right now I'm down one drive totally, and having one that is so slow it takes over night to run a scan on it. Both are 2 TBs on 3.0 USBs.

The one that does not work, when I unplug it and plug it back in it makes the windows sound like I've plugged something new in, and a couple of times my anti-virus has very randomly popped up saying "New drive detected to you want to scan" however when it goes to scan it does not do anything and says scan finished with zero files scanned.

I have changed around the USB ports with one other external that I have thinking that maybe the ports was messing up but it reads just fine if that helps any!

Thank you in advance for any help or advice in this matter!

Take a look at the following link:

http://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?h=p2&ID=6571&lang=en&p=306

May be occuring in Windows 10.....

Take a closer look at how each drive is configured. Use Disk Management to start with. Did you assign fixed drive letter to each drive?

I like to use Powershell for diagnostic work. The Get-Disk cmdlet may be very helpful.

Here is a link via Microsoft:

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/itpro/powershell/windows/storage/get-disk

You can find other similar links and you do not need to make any immediate changes to the drive(s) configurations unless you are very sure that the culprit is truly identified.

We just want to learn as much about each drive as possible. Something in conflict...

They are both connected with both power cable and USB, one is a Seagate GoFlex and the other WD My Book. Only other USB devices connected is Logitech Keyboard and Logitech Mouse as well as one other External another Seagate GoFlex.

Try using only one drive at a time.

But first try using other known working USB cables.

See if you can narrow down the problem to just the one of the Seagates or the WD.

Disconnect them and use only one external drive at at time. See if the problem occurs with just one particular drive or some particular sequence of drives and their respective connection.

Your objective is to eliminate possible sources of the problem.

Go step by step (device by device) and observe when performance degrades. Keep notes and look for some pattern.

Alright have done this (sorry for the long time/reply it took a bit to make sure I did it right), and went step by step. Everything works fine with the one working drive as well as mouse/keyboard. I plugged the two externals in with every cord/USB port I could and still same results on the two giving me the same issues. One not showing up/working, the other still working slow.

We just want to learn as much about each drive as possible. Something in conflict may turn up - meaning each drive okay on its own. The two together - no.

Then the next step will be look at the USB configuration.

Maybe something like this Xbox link. (Just for example purposes.)

Perhaps one of the USB cables is not what it should be:

Thank you, after a trial and error going through what the links (as well as others similiar) had said something happened and they both run great now! =) Sorry for the trouble and late reply! Not really sure what all happened, but it works, and I thank you for it! I as well picked up a couple of new USB cables which I don't think was the issue because the that runs fine ran on both so I don't know!
