Its a pre built desktop, Acer Desktop PC ATC-105-UR10.. It has an AMD A8 6500 with APU 8570D. 6GB of RAM, Win 10, and 1TB 7200RPM HDD. Also has a 300W PSU(stock one), and do realize also upgrading the PSU would be a good idea/might be needed.
I have picked out two some what budget GPU's. An Nvidia GTX 1050 and a AMD RX 460. Will either one of those work in my setup/are they any good? Also is my CPU capable of running games? My laptop with an i5 5200U and an 820M runs BF1 at low settings with 1366x728. Will the desktop setup run better or even as good as the laptop?
Will also be upgrading to more RAM, and my budget for th GPU would be around $150 CAD.

nope. All I'm saying is if you are strapped for cash, the GTX1050 should give you a nice bump up in performance. the A8 is not as good as the i5 in your laptop but if the game is limited by GPU, then you'll at least gain performance by using a discrete GTX1050 vs the integrated GPU of the A8. If you can afford it, a CPU/motherboard/RAM upgrade will provide yet another nice bump up in performance.

Ryzen doesn't have a GPU built in. if you add the GTX1050 or RX460, i'm almost 100% certain it will fare better than the 820M in your laptop unless the game is CPU limited. I *think* the GTX1050 doesn't need a PCI-E power connector (at least some dont), so you could get away with adding that GPU without changing your PSU. Just doublecheck that there's a PCI-E x16 slot on your motherboard.

I would rather not get another APU. I feel as though a dedicated GPU will give me better performance. My 820M is not any good. I have researched both the 1050 and the 820M and sites say my laptop should not be able to play Battlefield 1 while the 1050 should be able to play it at 1080 low to med but at the same time says the A8 6500 cant play it. Is the 6500 stronger than the 5200U?
