So I've bought my parents a new desktop (64-bit) with Windows 10 on it. I've backed up their entire C drive from their old Windows Vista machine (32-bit) onto my external HDD. How would I get all of the files on the external HDD onto their new C drive? I essentially want to migrate everything from the old PC to the new one so all of their things are in the same places.

Oh, and when you do this....

On the old drive, do NOT copy the entire /Documents/All of my Docs/
Just copy the actual files.

The folder carries the user permissions. This is how 2 different user accounts can see 2 different sets of things in /User/MyDadStuff/... and /Users/MyMomStuff/...

MyDadStuff and MyMomStuff carry the permissions for those user accounts. It will be a pain if you copy those entire folders over to the new system.

Just copy the files

How did you back it up a tool or manually? You are only going to be able to save personal files like photos videos images and things. Everything else will have to be reinstalled since it is a different architecture and a different operating system. The easiest thing you can do is share the other computers user folders and then browse the folders from the new pc and save it to a folder on another machine copy and paste to transfer it over lan. No backup needed that way. The other option is just put that drive in the new computer as a secondary and copy and paste everything over. Then you can either put it back in the old computer after you are done or use it for storage. You can't do this with system files! Or browse your backup and copy it all over but only things that are not operating system files and programs. Most personal files can be copied over. If you do put it in the new computer make sure the cmos is set to boot from your main drive and not the secondary drive.

I guess I backed it up with a tool? I just plugged in the external drive and used the Windows Backup to store a copy of everything on it. I was hoping there was a way to migrate everything over into their original places ex: from documents folder on old PC to documents folder on new PC etc. I'd try and make the old HDD a secondary drive on the new PC (I've always wanted to try this!) but I'm going to be using their old computer to tinker with :)

From what you're saying it looks like I'll have to manually put everything in its place on the new PC, which is fine, was hoping I wouldn't have to go through all the trouble, hahah. I suppose I'll just use the files I've already copied to my external drive and move them all over to the new PC manually - thank you for your answer!

32bit -> 64bit
The only things you can transfer are the personal files.
Doc/music/video.

You cannot transfer applications and programs.
