So first I wanna know if the I7 3770k, a pretty old cpu, would be bottlenecking my new GTX 980 Ti?

Second, I think my cpu is dying itself. I could have something as simple8 as Garry's mod or Minecraft open and EVERYTHING else on my computer will constantly crash. Other games will just constantly crash itself. This along with the fact that something as simple as my browser opening tanking my cpu at 100% usage slowig everything down for a bit, I have a feeling my cpu, after 5 years, is dying...

Edit: Completely fresh OS install on a completely new drive, problems persisted before and after. Crashes involve occassional full computer freeze requiring a forced restart

I doubt a 3770k would bottleneck a 980 ti in a significant way in any game, its still a very powerful cpu. What kind of crash? To the desktop? A full restart? Blue screen?

Is your OS also 5 years old and never reinstalled? I would blame it or a slow hard drive for delayed launching of your applications, it's unlikely a dying cpu would cause something like that. Nothing you have said indicates there is a problem with the cpu.

You could not upgrade to a 4770k with your current mobo, the 4770k is socket 1150 you have socket 1155. Nor would it be worth it if you could in my opinion.

I7-3770K should be fine with a 980 Ti. From what you've said about the CPU "dying", it seems like either you have a bad overclock applied, bad thermals, or a faulty CPU-motherboard contact. Can you list the specs of your system please?
