Hello!

I have 2 r9 290x gpus in my computer. I have 1 acer 1440p freesync monitor thats been great, hooked up to my top r9 290x. Ive recently pruchased a samsung 4k tv to use for a second display. Ive come to learn that the r9 290x does not display 4k 60hz 444 out of its hdmi port, so ive purchased a displayport to hdmi 2.0 adapter to run to the new tv.

can i use the display port on the second r9 290x with out running it in crossfire?

im not looking to use the crossfire feature since its almost useless in every game, but need to find a way to have both my 1440p and 4k 60hz monitor hooked up and functional at the same time.

not that it matters too much but here are the rest of my specs:
i7-6700k
32gb 3200mhz ddr4
1000wt psu

Solution

Yeah 1 R9 290X should still be able to do that on its own no problem. You shouldn't need 2.

Can you do it? Absolutely, just disable Crossfire in your Crimson settings and it will work fine.

Honestly though if you're not running Crossfire 1 R9 290X can do the job and run both displays. The second one is literally a waste of electricity, unless you somehow plan to run 2 separate 3d accelerated programs one on each display. Honestly the 6700k isn't really up to snuff to do that (basically run 2 games at once).

thanks for your reply.

Both monitors have different purposes- I play competitive shooters on the 1440p freesync acer. on the 55inch 4k, Im going to watch 4k films and play more casual 3rd person games.

Worth trying with just 1 card, see how it performs, then you can sell your second one. Just my 2 cents.

Yes, my issue though is that 1 r9 290x only has a single displayport, which is required for freesync and 4k 60hz. my question is if i can use the second r9 290x's displayport for the 4k without enabling crossfire

Ah good point. I thought it had more display ports, my bad. Either way it will totally do what you want, as long as you disable Crossfire in Crimson.
