Hello Everyone,

I'm currently in search of a budget gaming CPU upgrade that will subsequently have a decent upgrade path in the future.

I am currently running an old FX 4130 (4 cores) OCed to 4.4 GHz.

My System:
CPU: FX 4130
GPU: GTX 750 ti SC
Display: 1080p 60 Hz
RAM: 16 GB (8x2) DDR3 1600 MHz
MOBO: Gigabyte 78LMT-USB3
PSU: FSP Power Man 450W
128 GB PNY SSD
1 TB Toshiba 5400 RPM HDD

Will upgrading to Kaby Lake architecture with the Pentium G4560 provide a significant performance boost from the FX 4130? Will the substitution of 2 logical cores for 2 physical cores reduce performance if I make this change?

I don't multitask much (1 application at a type), and only play off of one display. I play RTS and simulation games mostly.

Also, does anyone know of a good motherboard that will support the G4560, but will allow for a future upgrade to an i5 or higher? I don't need SLI/Crossfire or anything fancy.

Thank you!

Yes it's a good choice and 8GB is still enough , although 16gb is becoming the standard.

Link above gives you a good start.

Thank you for the part breakdown. Do you think 8 GB of DDR4 will be sufficient for now? Also, do you think the pentium will provide a significant performance boost over the fx 4130?

A powerful CPU with lesser cores will beat a weaker CPU with more cores. In the case of the Pentium G4560 vs the FX 4130, you'd get +50% more performance with the Pentium than the FX (http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-G4560-vs-AMD-FX-4130-Quad-Core/3892vsm2420). Note that the Pentium G4560 has hyper-threading technology, making its 2 physical cores run as 4 threads (unlike the older Pentiums of previous generations).

The best thing about replacing your current CPU (and MB/RAM), is the opportunity to upgrade to better-performing CPUs in the future. The FX 4130 (socket AM3+ and DDR3 RAM) is a dead-end upgrade path, especially now that the AM4 sockets (AMD Ryzen) have been released. If you decide on Kaby Lake (socket 1151 and DDR4), going with a more affordable Pentium G4560 today will not only increase your performance compared to the FX4130 but also allows you to upgrade to any i3, i5, or i7 Intel CPU's (Kaby Lake *or* even Skylake 1151 sockets) in the future.

A good price/performance motherboard for a G4560 is the B250 chipset (does not support overclocking). You can select (depending on your case) a B250 (ATX) or B250M (mirco-ATX) motherboard. Usually, Asus is the go-to brand for quality in motherboards, but, MSI, Gigabyte, and AsRock are fine alternatives as well.

G4560 will be a good step up, in single core performance it is even better then an 8350.

You are not giving up anything. That 4130 is not a REAL quad core, it is pretty much just a dual core with hyperthreading as well.
Difference is the kabbylake pentium is modern archetecture while the 4130 is from 2012 and its archetecture was a little bellow intel's back then.

Thank you, Everyone, for your responses. You are greatly appreciated!

Per your information, I will probably proceed with the Pentium upgrade and begin a Kaby Lake upgrade path.
