Are my BSOD's hardware related

17/04/2017 UPDATE: Small update if anyone finds this thread. No BSOD's since I reinstalled Windows 8.1 through the original CD and installed the drivers from the motherboard CD (later updating chipset and audio through MSI's site).

I reinstalled the RAM and GPU (just taking them out and putting back in), and swapped out the PSU for a brand new one. So far no issues. Not a definite fix but somehow did the job. Also to note: using Game Ready Driver: 378.92 - WHQL

-

Second time I've had to make a thread on this out of pure desperation.

After a clean install of 8.1 I am still encountering BSOD's. They usually happen during games/after exiting games.

Most recent one is Kmode exception not handled. wdf01000.sys
Previous ones have been System service exception, memory managment, page fault in nonpaged area. ntosknrl.exe

PC was fine for about 2 years. (I'm using the same hardware still)

What I have tried to fix the problem:

- chkdsk /f /r on all drives: Nothing found
- sfc /scannow: Nothing found
- Full system scan: No Threats found

- MemTest86: 7 Hours approx to complete: Nothing found
- Windows Memory Diagnostic: Nothing found

- Re-installing the RAM
- Re-installing the GPU

- Used DDU to remove Nvidia drivers and reinstalled the latest one: Still BSOD
- Used DDU to remove Nvidia drivers and reinstalled with the very first one: Still BSOD
- Used DDU to remove Nvidia drivers and reinstalled with a 2016 one: Still BSOD

If anyone know's anything or if this is hardware related please tell me. I have stress tested the GPU and nothing happens with that. However previous research told me that it could be a failing card. I don't mind buying a new one but would like to make sure first. Thanks

Can you follow option one here: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5560-bsod-minidump-configure-create-windows-10-a.html
and then do this step below: Small memory dumps - Have Windows Create a Small Memory Dump (Minidump) on BSOD

that creates a file in c/windows/minidump
copy that file to documents
upload the copy from documents to a cloud server and share the link here and someone with right software to read them will help you fix it :)

its possible directions slightly different for Win 8, I couldn't find anything specific to it. If you upload those Paul may be able to find the actual problem for you

wdf01000.sys = Kernel Mode Driver Framework Runtime or Kernel Mode Driver Frameworks service by Microsoft. Somehow I don't think this was cause but was tripped by a driver

Can you download and run who crashed - it will give us a glimpse of the errors you getting and might help us solve them

Copy/paste summary in here and I see what I can do :)

I read the dmp. I haven't read them before but it says it was "probably" caused by USBXHCI.sys .
I'm not sure on how accurate that was but there was some other stuff about wdf01000.sys as well and also the some Kernel stuff.

If you want to check out the crash dump i'll post it for you.

I've once again reinstalled 8.1, this time through using the original CD and installing drivers from the motherboard CD and some new ones off of the MSI site. So far so good. All drivers are now fresh and have not been messed up.

BlueScreenView on Windows 10 when I had it, showed ntoskrnl.exe and sometimes wdf01000.sys as the problematic file and was causing all sorts of BSOD's. I don't know much on this stuff so i'm glad you've replied. :wahoo: If you have anymore knowledge on what was or could still be a cause please share it.

ntsokrnl = windows kernel, PC will crash if this does as it has no choice. It often gets blamed for driver errors,
USBXHCI.sys = USB drivers. If you hadn't reinstalled Win 8.1 I would have suggested updating USB drivers for motherboard.

Generally best idea to not use DVD that comes with motherboard and try to use latest drivers on motherboard site, old drivers may not match hardware you using. MSI has a program called Live Update 6, if you run it on board it may find newest drivers for you - it may be in the utilities tab of motherboard web site.

Yeah I'm aware that the CD is out of date but at least I can rely on it doing the job correctly, I used it for the sound and LAN.. the rest I got from the site. I wanted to use the CD specifically for those two things because I was using those versions of the drivers during the time I had no problems with anything so just to be sure I won't be touching those drivers again.

As for USB drivers, that Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver - says on their site that Windows 8 includes them and that there are no updates for it if you are on Win8x.

And yeah that Live Update program, I've used it before, pretty much just lists whats on the site with some added stuff for overclocking that I won't be trying out.

It's been a day and so far no BSOD. I hope I'm in the clear.
If anything happens I'll post it here. :D

I've also done that several times. No luck. How about buying a whole new card?

Sure. I'll post the link here tomorrow for some expert eyes. I'll also take a look at the minidump myself just in case I notice something. Thanks.

Looks like directx is crashing. dxgmms1.sys

Which may still be video driver related. I would see if there are updated killer networks drivers. They're 4 yrs old

These drivers are also known to cause crashes. If you use this Smart Connect Technology Device Driver. I would update it's driver

ISCTD64.sys is 5 yrs old. This file MBfilt64.sys. Realtek HD Audio driver is 8 yrs old

Your Realtek wireless drivers are 3 yrs old RTWlanU.sys

Is Intel Extreme Tuning installed? If it is, I would uninstall it

Thanks :)
I'll update KillerNetwork and those Realtek ones. And no Extreme Tuning is not installed. If this BSOD happens again what would you suggest I do next? A whole new GPU? Would this somehow refresh DirectX and prevent this conflict?

I would look like to get these errors fixed another way but if this keeps happening I will likely buy a new one if there's a good chance of it resolving this way.

I've just updated those now. Realtek Manager software now says "Audio Driver Version: 6.0.1.8010" Which is the latest according to my motherboards driver page. This should help.

lol.

I had to use ASUS drivers off the ASUS site. For the other PC here.

Because it didnt matter what version I installed from the Nvidia site. I tried a later version, the version after that.

And it kept crashing (windows didnt crash). The drivers stopped responding, the screen kept going black every 2-3 mins like forever.

Nothing worked in Firefox. After I reinstalled the ASUS drivers (even though theyre older), it's been fine

Funny you brought that method up. Even after installing those off of the Gigabyte page I still had the BSOD's. I will give it one last try.

I hadn't bothered updating them for a month or so, Windows update was doing it for me as it installed some last month. I figure newer drivers more likely to be built for the newer cards even though mine is still last generation so not ancient by any means. The latest drivers for my card on Asus site are September last year, I see no reason to return to them.

GPU are the only drivers I don't normally recommend to get from card makers, I usually recommend Nvidia or AMD. At least Nvidia only have 1 set of drivers, they didn't follow amd and make legacy drivers for everything below a certain model. Support for old cards may not be great but at least you aren't relegated to also rans.

I'm honestly so tempted to buy a 1070. Since i'm using a 2560x1080 monitor I need a bit more power to push those frames.

Before buying new hardware, I would make sure PC isn't suffering from another drivers errors instead

You can try running driver verifer just read the instructions carefully. It is part of windows designed to find misbehaving drivers. It will cause BSOD, that is its job since it tests drivers.

Once it bsod, run Who crashed and see what driver it reveals

Tried windowsupdate too on the other PC. It did the same thing as the Nvidia drivers

This PC (I'm using the onboard Intel video ports). I used windowsupdate to install the drivers / and update them

Because the Intel site is too confusing. You cant figure out what you need. And the Intel driver update util whatever it's called sucks.

It tells you there's a driver available.

But if you install it, it'll either say wrong versions of windows, or it doesnt apply, or it doesn't meet the system requirements

So, lucky the drivers windows update installs work. Otherwise I would be looking at an oversized screen.
