ASRock x370 Gaming K4 bios issue

So I bought the motherboard in the title. All fine and dandy when I got it, working as intended. However, 2 issues have arised. My RAM G.Skill Ripjaws Series 4 DDR4 3000Mhz 16GB (8GBx2) is only running at 2133MHz and any attempt to clock it higher turns it into a boot loop until it returns to default bios settings. Max supported rate for the mobo is 2667.

On top of that I cannot get the CPU to over clock either and post. So I decided to check the new bios' since its a new board. Mine is currently running with revision P1.3, on Asrocks website its lists 1.60 and a beta 1.63 revision. The 1.60 revision shows CPU over clocking and quick flashing and the 1.63 adds addition lal xmp memory support. So it looks all fine and dandy right? Just update your bios and your good to go. We'll unfortunately I can't seem to get my bios to update. They have a DOS and Windows version of bios updating. Neither one works for me. There's not even a flash utility of tool in my bios.

I'm currently at a loss and have contacted ASRock support and waiting on a response. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

TL;DR RAM not running at max speed, CPU won't overclock. Can't update Bios, need help.

There's a way to manually update the bios which will be in your user manual. One of the latest bios files will work. You may need to create a bootable usb stick in order for it to work.

The Ryzen boards have been known to only support lower speed RAM on older bios revisions.

I've tried flashign with a bootable USB but nothing happens, it just restarts as it normally would. I don't even see an attempt for it to flash.

In the "App shop" there should be a section named bios and drivers. Any new versions there?

I don't know for sure but there should also be an update option in the bios, which will use the usb to update. I'm guessing you have tried that route though.

Unfortunately no, it just shows audio and lan drivers. In the bios there isn't any flashing tool or utility, it says in the manual that it should be there but it isn't. :\

Hmm, well I hope someone can find this thread and find the answer you are looking for. I'm all out of options to go forward, I read the manual for your board and it isn't the most detailed :(

I was actually considering the Asrock boards instead of ASUS again, for my build (They were more available at the time).

Thanks man I appreciate your help. :( I had the ASrock 990FX Fati Killer for my FX 8320 and it was great so I wanted to do the same with my new Ryzen 1700 and so far it's not looking good lol.

Unfortunately I've done all that multiple times now, and no dice. It just boots normally, doesn't even attempt to flash. From what I i've seen on flashing asrock boards through usb there should be multiple files typically from the bios download, but I only ever get one file. I don't know if that's the issue or not.

All you need is that one file from them you need to make a dos bootable usb drive.

I was thankfully able to get ahold of ASRock and I finally got it flashed. I'm able to OC the CPU but cant get my RAM to run at rated speeds now.

Yes, please share the solution, as I too am having the exact same issue.

I contacted ASRock for support. First they emailed me horrible written instructions, then told me to send the motherboard back!

Here's the instructions they emailed me:

you need to download the program RUFUS from the link below and the copy the bios file (already unzipped) to the usb as well.
restart your PC and press F11 and select to boot from your USB , this process in some cases need to be repeated twice in order to reprogram the bios

So download a program, copy a bios file onto a usb, boot from usb, and do this twice. Uhm, I think this is missing a whole bunch of steps!!!

Asrock was of no help to me.. I figured out how to flash the bios though.. Heres what I did.

1. Download rufus and create a dos bootable statup usb stick.. There'll be a box to check in rufus to make it dos bootable.

2. Download correct Dos bios version from Asrock website.

3. Unzip downloaded DOS Bios and copy over the .exe file to the usb stick, there's no need to copy the folder, just include the file by itself.

4. Restart computer and go into bios to make usb stick the 1st boot priority. save setting and exit. Next reboot, it should boot from usb stick.

5. Once the usb stick boots to DOS, you can type DIR to see a list of files on the usb stick. you should see the .exe file you copied over in step 3.The asrock fatality k4 bios should read something like x370gk4164 (or whichever version you downloaded).

6. Begin by typing X370 then press the tab key, that should fill in the rest of the filename. Press enter and the file should open up. Let it do its thing and when you're prompted to press any key to restart, go ahead and do so. Leave the usb stick plugged in and when system reboots, it will begin to flash the bios. At that point, let the bios flash finish and then you should be good to go.

First, dispr817 thank you for the detailed tips.

Unfortunately this did not work.

I had been using an old Windows 95 DOS boot USB stick that I created years ago. I knew it was Windows 95 based because it briefly flashed the Win95 logo screen before dropping to a DOS prompt.

Thinking that was maybe the problem, I followed your steps exactly, and used Rufus to reformat the stick and install FreeDOS. I was very hopeful!

I successfully get to step 6, all the way to the "Press any key to restart..." prompt. No errors along the way. I press a key, it reboots, and it goes back to the FreeDOS C:\ prompt. It never actually attempts to flash the BIOS.

I tried this with the "X370PG155.exe" BIOS exe file in the C:\ root and in a separate BIOS folder. Same results.

The ONLY thing I can see the BIOS file doing when I execute it, is it creates a new file in the same directory. The file is named DOSROM (with no extension), and the size of the file is the exact same size as the BIOS executable file.

My hunch is that the DOSROM file is somehow supposed to be the new bootup ROM file, and the boot stick should point to it somehow to use on the reboot, and that is the mechanism that is failing.

Is there a manual edit I can make on the USB stick to somehow tell it to boot from this DOSROM file?

SOLVED! Hopefully this helps someone else.

At the DOS prompt, when you enter the BIOS file name to run it ("X370PG155 in my case"), you can append a "/?" to see a list of options (so I typed "X370PG155 /?" and hit enter).

One of the options is the flag "/NR", for No Reboot.

So I ran the update as "X370PG155 /NR", and just like before it appeared to complete successfully, but instead of the "Press any key to continue..." prompt, it dropped me back to the C:\ prompt.

I then hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to manually reboot. On reboot, I hit F11 to go into the Boot Options (not sure if this is relevant to the process, but I did this and didn't want to omit any steps). The UEFI GUI popped up just after I hit F11, displaying what at first I thought were the boot options, but on second look I realized that the BIOS was now flashing!!!

TL;DR:
Run BIOS exe file from a DOS prompt with the /NR option flag, then manually reboot when it finishes.

I was stymied as well - I had zero luck booting Dos using USB drives or CDs - eventually realized that I had disabled CSM to install the OS to a GPT disk. After enabling CSM, I was able to boot to dos and run the .exe file - I was a bit surprised that the actual installation only occurs after a subsequent reboot.

[strike]I'm in the same boat, so I've contacted asrock support asking for a download of a version with the exe. If they provide one I will share the link and host a copy of the file on google drive for a while.[/strike]

Literally a minute after I posted this I found a a download with an exe version of 1.6, which should be runnable from DOS, and should feature the flashing utility find it HERE.

My issue here is, EVERY bios file I download (1.50 or 2.20) is not an exe. I have no idea why the links you guys provided, as well as elsewhere online, aren't giving me the dang exe file I need...
