I own an i5 3470 and it runs way too hot.
I have the stock cooler on and I have changed the thermal paste but still it runs way hotter than it should.
I've got a really large case with enough fans so I don't think this should be happening.
It idles at about 50C and under load it goes to about a 100C. Although intel says that it will thermal throttle at 67C, it doesn't throttle until it reaches 105C.
I bought it used but I don't think that has anything to do with it because it runs quite smoothly and offers the performance it should be offering. I've heard that ivy bridge cpus have a very crappy thermal paste in between the die and the heat spreader an it tends to "wear out" over time and doesn't conduct heat so efficiently after a few years. I'm thinking about delidding my cpu and changing the thermal paste but I know that its way too risky and that we shouldn't be delidding a cpu unless and until we plan on serious overclocking. This is a locked cpu so I can't really overclock it. Any suggestions as to what I should do now? I'm thinking of buying an aftermarket cooler but I don't think that would solve my problem if the problem is with the thermal paste beneath the heat spreader.

Solution
When I got my i7 3770s used, it also had a stock cooler, I replaced the thermal paste on it and it was peaking around the high 90C, them stock coolers are junk on Ivy Bridge, I'd look into the Coolermaster Hyper 212, its cheap and will get the job done easly. There are other options as well for coolers, if you have a question about a different cooler, feel free to ask.

Coolermaster Hyper 212 with LED fan, at least on Newegg in the US, it was cheaper than the standard 212 with a non led fan.

Solution
I got the Corsair H100I GTX, It was way more than what the CPU needed, CPU never got too much more than 45 - 50C. I bought the h100 because I was planning on a i7 5820k build plus the i7 3770s was throttling, but kept putting it off until recently, H100i GTX is overkill for you're CPU, If you plan to stay with your i5, a cheap Air cooler thats rated around 100watt TDP should do much better than the stock Intel cooler.

Damn... your cpu has a tdp of just 65W.... a liquid cooler is not really suitable for a locked cpu. Anyway, I'll buy the 212evo or I'll buy the deepcool gammax, they'll do the job just fine. Or I could just build a custom watercooling loop for just around 30$ that would be much better. Thanks.

Yeah I bought the h100I GTX for a future upgrade, but used on the i7 3770s for the mean time since it was to hot already. I wouldn't of bought the h100 for just that chip.
