So the other day I opened my trustee laptop to do some cleaning on the fan and other components, when i un screwed the fan i noticed the residue from the thermal paste on the CPU so I decided to just wipe it straight off of the CPU itself. It was literally just the residue not even the thermal paste, then when i put the fan back on i made sure the thermal paste lined up with the cpu and all. But now every time i load up any game (H1Z1, CSGO, Rust etc.) It crashes briefly after starting a game up. Could it be that when I wiped the little tiny bit of excess of that it messed it up? or could it also be that i didnt line it up correctly or the screws werent in properly?

Solution
General rule, you should always apply new thermal paste after taking off a heatsink.

Consider the thermal paste left over dead weight, it's lost it's heat conducting potential.

Remove the rest with isopropyl alcohol (70% or more, 90% works best/better) and apply new paste.
