Long time AMD fan here.

Athlon 64 X2 4400+, dual core (2008)
Athlon II X3 450, triple core (2011)
FX-4300, quad core (2014)

Gaming on an 1080p/60Hz 50" LG led. Will upgrade to a 4K 55" led after 2-3 years.

Last month I upgraded my GPU from R9 270X to RX 480 4GB. I avoid nvidia as two of their GPUs went dead on me in the past.

I noticed a lag in Witcher 3 even after upgrading the GPU, I wanted to play Ultra mode with HairFX at 1440p (VSR) but I can only do 60fps+ at 1080p. So I thought it was time to upgrade the CPU too as it could be the bottleneck. Plus my 850 EVO SSD was also running in Sata 2 (3/gb mode), PCIe in 2.0 and 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB) is just 1600Mhz.

I wanted to go for Ryzen but after seeing the reviews, alas, I have now ordered an i5 7500 ($240) with a $90 MoBo and a single 8GB DDR4 2400 ram (will add another 8GB later if required).

The order will arrive on Monday. I just wanted to know that I have made the right decision. I can still refuse the delivery on Monday. What say? :benetton:

Solution
If you need that system now then the 7500 is a good choice of cpu.

Personally though I would have waited for the drop of the ryzen 3 & 5 series chips.

I have no doubt at all that both these ranges will offer very very similar single core performance (& in some cases better) while also offering extra threads & cores while sitting at a similar pricepoint.

Have you made a bad decision ? - no not really
Have you made the right decision ? - only time will tell.

You want to play The Witcher 3 at 1440p full settings? My 6700K at 4.6Ghz with 16GB of DDR4 3200 and a 980 Ti gets about 50-55 FPS maxed at 1440p. An overclocked 980 Ti is roughly equal to a GTX 1070. It's a very demanding game. 60 FPS at 1440p with full settings requires an overclocked GTX 1070 or GTX 1080.

1440p will be more dependent on your graphics card than your CPU. That being said you need a CPU powerful enough to drive your graphics card. You're bottlenecking with that FX 4300 no doubt and the i5 will be a huge improvement but don't expect magic. The RX 480 isn't capable of maxing that game at 1440p.

I can get about 70fps average on TW3 maxed with a 1080 and 6700k on ultra settings w/ hairworks on Geralt.
Doesn't dip below 60 much, maybe it'll dip to 55 sometimes, but I have G-Sync on so that doesn't really matter. :)
You should be able to get med-high with hairworks and godrays off 60fps fine.

I rather go for Intel i5 7600 is even more solider. its $230 USD in Amazon and Newegg, but since you already went ahead and order it..no need to cancel as long you bought the right motherboard,

What motherboard you bought a H270 or B250?

If you NOT a Overclocker - then yes you can buy Top Intel i5 Non-Overclockable CPU / Intel i5 7600 for gaming, but he already bought the Intel i5 7500 - So thats good.

I hope I can get smooth 60~50fps @ 1440p by lowering few settings here and there. Just saw this article from techspot.

Seeing above I assume to get atleast 150% boost in gaming by upgrading from FX-4300 to i5 7500. Even an i3 would have sufficed but i5 is future proof considering I will upgrade to an GTX 1080 equivalent GPU after 2-3 years.

I pay +20% duty so i5 7600 would cost me $275. Yes, I bought Gigabyte B250.

If you already ordered the Intel i5 7500 fully you do not need cancel it , its good alongside your Motherboard (That Gigabyte Brand usually focus on Durability mostly which is good) so enjoy your performance.

"only time will tell" That was quiet comforting. Lol.

Seeing the Ryzen lineup pricing, I am sure now the i5 7500 ($199 net) would really not be a bad choice against similar priced upcoming R5 1400X (also $199 then).

Thank you everyone. I will happily accept the i5 when it arrives. :)

On fx I was able to get about 20fps at 1440p in Witcher 3. But now I get 40-45 fps with same settings ultra-high mixed and hairworks on. So i5 is working great with RX 480.

My question (to anyone who has a non k + b250) is there anything I can further tweak in bios to oc my cpu or just enhance a bit further?

How about enabling intel speed step? Does it effect gaming?

I see most OC options are disabled in bios but they are there. Does that mean if I had a K series cpu it would have been able to OC somehow even on B250 boards?

No, B250 does not allow overclocking even with a K sku CPU.

Speed step is a power savings feature. It will not affect gaming.

Not using dual channel RAM is hurting your overall performance in the 5-10% range. You should have bought a matched set as mixing sticks is hit or miss but that's the only place you're going to get more performance without replacing components.

@anort3: I did buy another 8gb and now have 16gb on dual channel. The game is playable with 45~ fps @ 1440p and I guess I can live with that. Witcher 3 looks too good in 1440p compared to 1080p that I can't go back to 1080p even when I get 90+fps at it. Thanks for your help. Do let me know if you find any other ideas. Looks like I have to upgrade to a new GPU earlier than I thought.
