can i make my linux (ubuntu 16) live usb so that i can pull the usb and work on a "virtual drive" that gets created on the computers main drive but upon shutdown it moves all files to the usb persistent file? i would like to be able to use my live install of linux without a usb stick poking out the side.. any insight would be appreciated

Solution
Some distrobution can be loaded into ram and able to then remove usb stick. Must be be a specialized distro like porteus, puppylinux, slitaz, slax...ubuntu not able to do this.

This is the one I bought http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SanDisk-Cruzer-Fit-CZ33-8GB-Mini-Nano-USB-Flash-Pen-Drive-Memory-Thumb-Stick/192016710399?_trksid=p2045573.c100507.m3226&_trkparms=aid%3D555017%26algo%3DPL.CASSINI%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20151016114640%26meid%3Da762a63697ee4eeb8fce8ef08604a4c3%26pid%3D100507%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26

I'm not recommending this seller, merely showing the product as I've had lots of good use out of it. The nbetbook runs WIndows 10 most of the day but I can boot from Kali by tapping F12 to change the option when I'm out Pen Testing.

I used Rufus to make the stick bootable and incoprporate the OS. I wanted to use a SdCard but the BIOS won't recognise my Sd slot as a bootable device.

I've swapped your award of the Best Answer over in line with your comments. :D
