5.0GHz 7700k high temps with HT on?

Just built a new system (very new to overclocking), and when running Cinebench my 7700k runs at 5.0GHz with a MAX package temp of 77°C and shows only 1.25V on CPU-Z with my ASUS fan profiles set to silent in Q-FAN. Which I assume is perfectly fine for a stress test. But I can only achieve this with HyperThreading off.

If I turn HT on my MAX package temp hits high 80°C's before I get scared and stop the test! And that's even with my fan profiles set to Turbo.

Does this sound right?

I mean, HT might not be that useful to me in the real world so I could leave it off but still.





For reference my 7700k has an NZXT Kraken X62 on it with the 2x stock NZXT (4 pin) fans on the front of the rad and 2x Corsair ML140's (4 pin) on the back of the rad (push/pull), the 2x Corsair fans are connected to CHASSIS FAN 3 on my motherboard and the 2x NZXT fans are connected to CHASSIS FAN 2 on my motherboard.

All I've done in the way of overclocking is set the multiplier to 50 and the voltage to 1.370v

Hyperthreading will cause a small temperature increase. It is "normal".

The usefulness of HT depends on what you are doing -
Gaming won't matter much if at all.
Tasks such as video encoding will benefit from HT.

Leave it off for gaming.

The push/pull fan configuration might be actually hurting the airflow if one set is moving less air.

Thanks, I think I've actually managed to improve my temps a little. NZXT CAM has been giving my issues and not recognising my Kraken cooler, but I think I've fixed it and so I'm now able to set my Krakens pump speed to 'performance'.

I'm not so sure I can believe this but while running Cinebench I'm getting:

5.0GHz
HT = On
Max package temp of 86°C
VCore 1.23 in CPU-Z (it's set to 1.37 in BIOS)

From what I've read a peak temp of mid 80's is Ok for a stress test on a 7700k as that should result it mid to high 70's in normal situations.

I've ran Cinebench 5 times in a row with no rest period for the CPU but maybe it isn't a very good stress test?

I'll probably disable HT anyway as a game I play plays better with it off and requires a high clock speed (this me wanting to OC).

Maybe I'm missing something here but have I achieved what I wanted?

Oh and as for the push/pull fan setup on my CPU rad, you may be right but I'll do some more reading up. All 4 fans are 4pin 140's and they are all configured to run on exactly the same profile, the only unknowns are whether the 2 different types have the same flow rate (probably not) and whether a different flow rate actually matters. Worst case scenario I'll get another 2x ML140's so all 4 fans on that rad match each other.

I would prefer to never go over 80c even with a stress test. But if you are stable put the stress test away and use something like x264 or real world applications and see where the temps fall.

If it is stable and gives the speed you want while remaining cool then yes.

Yeah I can't give an exact answer without knowing the stock fans CFM. Just an observation.

Thanks, I'll give x264 a shot next then. I'm guessing I'll have to dial back the OC a little though after that. We'll see. Thanks for the info :)

Well, just as I thought I had to dial the OC back to 4.8GHz to get through x264.

Even then and with the Krakens fans and pump at 100% the package still hit 85°C MAX. And the Vcore only goes up to 1.270v during the test?

Not quite sure why though as from what I've read the Kraken should handle a 5.0GHz OC on the 7700k?

What am I missing here?


I'll put my 980ti in there tomorrow and try some gaming, maybe it'll perform better in a real world test.

I know many will disagree but if it does okay in normal use then who cares about stress tests.

Not sure about that Vcore. Maybe it is throttling.
If you have SpeedFan it will show "Distance to tj max" - This is how far it is from throttling.
