can you connect a gtx 1060 and a 1050 ti?

Hi

New to this idea of connecting to graphis cards, so, I'm not sure if they have to be the same model? Also, I read they need to say SLI somewhere.

No, SLI requires the exact same model. As for the current generation only the GTX 1070 and 1080 support SLI. Mainly because SLI is worthless on lower end models. As a single higher end card is better on average than two low end cards in SLI.
