I'm planning on buying a Asus RT-AC5300 router. Will this get me better ping for steam? My current router is a cisco-linksys e4200 dual band N-wireless router which i bought around 2011. Please help me out, thank you.

Do not get sucked into the bigger number is better trap. The 4x4 feature sounds good but it depends on your end devices have 4 antenna which is rare. Having 2 5g radios does not improve the performance of a single device it only allows you to reduce competition between your devices by spreading them over 2 radios. This also assumes that you have no neighbors and can use all the 5g bandwidth for yourself. This guartees you now compete with neighbors for bandwidth.

The router you have is fine I suspect. It matches most end devices that have only 2 antenna and even 3 antenna.

If you can get all you pay for on speedtest then a new router is not going to help you. You will not reduce the ping times just by replacing a router...

If you use wireless it is all related to interference between you and your router and a new router will not help that. The latency via ethernet cable should always be 1ms.

Pretty much the only way a new router would reduce your latency is if you were running something like vpn on the router. That is very cpu intensive and a faster processor might help. Then again the cpu rates even in cheaper routers is so high now days this tends to not be a issue any more.

While it can shave some ms off your ping time it's your location and type of service that seriously defines your ping times. Let's say you have internet provided by satellite. Switching to a ground based cable connection would improve ping times significantly. Fiber can be even better.

You should also look to WIndows 10's Services and other settings related to your network. Consider Background Intelligent Transfer Services. It downloads or uploads files necessary for updating Windows. Well I just updated my Windows to the latest build. I also said upload. Joe Blow in Kipsilantum NM. has not updated. You share your Windows update files with him. There are more than a few settings one needs to change so that Windows isn't impacting your internet activity and by extension your ping times. I want as many resources I have available to be dedicated to my task(s) at hand.

What about other programs? Are they searching for and possibly downloading an update while you're gaming?
