SSD setup on new build

I have a new build. Incredibly, it boots. It has an ASRock Z97 Extreme6, EVO 850 SSD, DVD and an HD.

I have a WIndows 10 USB ready to install.

But Windows only sees the HD and that's the only option it offers to install to. I understand I should install to the SSD.

Can anyone point me to what to look at? Is it normal for the SSD not to be recognized and I have to do something like tell the BIOS about it? Or is a HW error more likely, or what?

If the answer is the BIOS, if anyone wants to point me to any how-to to save some time feel free or I'll google it.

Check the Sata cable going to the SSD. Your motherboard manual will probably tell you which Sata port to connect the boot drive to. Try connecting the SSD to the Sata port that the HDD is currently connected to, using the same cable that the HDD is connected with.

Some early googling suggests a change of some setting to AHCI, and changing 'combine mode' to 'disabled', but since I have no idea about this I'd prefer a more direct reply with any suggestions.

The plot thickens. I went into the BIOS, and it's already set to AHCI.

It has a long list of device names like SATA 3_0, SATA3_1, SATA3_2 etc.

They all say 'not detected' except one, SATA3_1 lists the HD.

The SSD and optical drive are not there.

Now what?

Update: it does see the optical, I had to scroll down. But not the SSD.

I found a guide saying to change a setting "Launch Storage OpROM Policy" from 'legacy' to UEFI only, but it didn't change anything in the behavior.

So still stuck with no SSD recognized.
