My laptop have 3 usb ports out of which 2 are not working. so i am planning to buy a usb hub but confused between powered and unpowered.
I have to connect 1 keyboard and an Xbox Wireless controller's receiver at a same time. Will the unpowered one be sufficient because i dont wanna spend any unnecessary bucks on powered one if the unpowered is working for me. Can someone confirm that to me?
Thanks

I think you will be fine, but don't plug any power hungry or passive USB device that are...
Powered hub is always better, because it draws power from external power supply that makes the hub more stable. But passive USB hub is also good, especially if portability matters most.

What type of USB version does your laptop have? 2.0/3.0 or 3.1 type C?
Is the keyboard you want to connect is a high-end mechanical keyboard?

If there is a type C connector, you can buy unpowered one since USB type C can deliver up to 100w of power via thunderbolt 3, If I'm not wrong.
If you plan to connect only your controller and keyboard, I think it's okay.

My laptop has the 2.0 version of USB and no its not a high-end keyboard just a regular one.

I think you will be fine, but don't plug any power hungry or passive USB device that are "bus powered" into the hub. You don't want if the USB hub burned and render your only USB port unusable, right?

Also consider a branded USB hub like Belkin or Anker. They made good USB 2.0 and 3.0 hubs with USB bus overload protection. Any generic, Chinese made hubs are well known to die if and often short the laptop's USB bus.
