Hello all,

I am going to purchase a customized albeit already built pc from www.ecollegepc.com. I know that to get the most for my money and needs that I should build it myself but I'm not comfortable doing that on my own just yet. I've been heavily researching parts for this build and although my knowledge is increasing, I don't want to tackle that venture just yet.

I am going to use this rig for gaming, animation, video editing, and whatever else I might get into as I go through school.

This will be an entry level rig that I will want to upgrade in the future so keep that in mind when making suggestions.

Here are the parts I've somewhat settled on at this point:

Intel Core i5 6500 3.2 Ghz 6MN Cache Quad Core

Stock Intel LGA1151 Heatsink and Fan

GIGABYTE GA-Z170M-D3H (Intel z170, HDMI, 2xPCI-E, 6xSATA, 4xDDR4)

16GB G.Skill Ripjaws PC4 19200 DDR4 2400 Mhz (8GBx2)

250GB SAMSUNG 850 EVO Series SSD

1TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache SATA3 6Gbps Toshiba P300

16X LG WH16NS40 Blue ray Disc Burner 3D playback

4GB GeForce GTX 1050 Ti

NZXT H440 Razer case

500W Corsair CX500 V2 80 PLUS CERTIFIED

My questions are, will I be okay with a stock heatsink and fan? I don't plan on overclocking or anything like that and the H440 Razer comes with 3 fans already.

Toshiba or WD for the hard drive? WD has the longer warranty but from what I've seen, Toshiba is faster at this storage tier (unless it's the other way around?)

Lastly, I don't know what my power needs will be nor what PSU to choose. I was thinking about this one as well:

For those that want to know the monitor I went with: (ASUS VG278HV 27 inch Full HD) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DDR0FE2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Any and all suggestions are welcome and you are not just limited to my own questions. I'm curious to know what you guys think of the build and what could make it better. As of now the total price of this setup is $1278. I have already chosen a monitor, keyboard, and mouse so $1300 is the budget y'all have to work with!

Since you said you don't plan on overclocking, getting a Z170 motherboard (which supports overclocking) is a waste of money and features. For a locked (non-overclockable) i5-6500, you'd be better off (feature-wise and financial-wise) getting an H110 or B150 motherboard (both of which are ideal for locked CPUs).

You'd be okay using the stock CPU cooler for locked CPUs such as the i5-6500.

I'd recommend WD than Toshiba, personally. The WD Blue 1TB (WD10EZEX) is a good balance in price/performance.

Since you purchased a 1080p 144Hz, your GPU (GTX 1050 Ti) *might* (or would) struggle hitting that high frame rates (depending on the games). You might consider getting a GTX 1060, if budget permits (or an RX 480), AND decrease some in-game graphics settings (again, depending on games) to get that smooth 100++ fps.

I'd suggest Seasonic M12II-520 EVO (affordable and good-quality) or the Seasonic G-550 (better but a bit costlier) or the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 or G3 550W (7-year warranty and great quality) if your budget permits (especially if you will be looking to upgrade your GPU to a more powerful one in the future without replacing your PSU).

Another thing: the NZXT H440 does not have an external 5.25" bay for your Blu-Ray drive. Either you change your case to one that has one, or, eliminate the internal Blu-Ray and get an external one.

Here is a suggested $995-build (Kaby Lake/7th-gen locked i5 + GTX 1060):

Well after reading your recommendations I've decided to take the plunge and build the PC myself. I just don't want to compromise on any features and I know I will save money doing this. So in keeping a $1000 budget in mind (I won't get the xtra money for building it myself) I'm gonna head back into the world of researching parts :)

I think I'll end up sticking with most things but I just want to make sure I'm getting the most for my buck. I'm really wanting that smooth 100+fps so I don't know what to go less on so I can a gpu/CPU combo to support that.
