reinstalled windows vista on this old dell xps 420, tried to wipe everything out and get some new life into it for my wife to have a pc of her own to use, gtx 295 works fine in it, had a his hd 7970 in my newer computer that worked great for years so i know it works, i upgraded from the 7970 in my new computer and figured i would put it in the xps 420, the psu in the xps 420 has been upgraded to a 650 watt, the power cables are exactly the same going from the gtx 295 to the hd 7970 so i figured would be a simple upgrade, uninstalled the drivers for the gtx 295 put in the hd 7970, the computer turns on then shuts off a few times before coming back on to nothing but a black screen with the fans going loud, and the xps 420 mini view won't display anything, not sure if there is something special i need to do to accomplish this upgrade or if it's just hopeless, thank you for any help replies and recommendations.

do you think it could help to try and upgrade from vista to windows 7 in getting the card to work with the system? if so any recommendations as to a safe web site to purchase windows 7. had a heck of a time doing a reinstall of windows vista ha, hoping it won't be as difficult upgrading to windows 7.
Not a Windows problem. It's common for companies like Dell & HP to restrict what hardware will work on their motherboards, its a restriction in the BIOS you cannot change. The idea is it stops people putting in parts and causing problems, like frying the PSU and then making warranty claims. Usually Dells have crap PSU's too, that so called 650w probably only has 400w on the 12v rail.
