Hello. i am saving up for a budget pc. But will the MSI B150M Night Elf Work with an i5 7400 Kaby Lake CPU?

Thanks in advance

Solution
The MSI B150M (having a B150 chipset that was released coinciding the 6th-gen Intel Skylake CPUs) *might* need a BIOS update for a 7th-gen Intel Kaby Lake CPU (such as that i5-7400) to work, most especially IF the motherboard you will get was manufactured PRIOR to the release of the Kaby Lake CPUs.

There is also a chance that the MSI B150M motherboard you might receive was manufactured AFTER the release of Kaby Lake, wherein, there is a *possibility* that the motherboard has already an updated BIOS out-of-the-box to support the i5-7400. Else, the i5-7400 will fit, but won't boot.

Only way to boot it up to update the BIOS is to plug in a Skylake CPU.

So, to eliminate the chances/risks of these hassles and incompatibilities, I would...

Solution
it would but likely its BIOS will need to be updated to work with kaby lake CPU's as these board's were originally designed for Intel's 6th gen skylake processors.

If it doesn't have the right update the board will not be able to boot to perform a BIOS update and you would be stuck buying a 6th gen sky lake CPU just to do a BIOS updae

I installed an i5-7400 in a B150m night elf mobo and have encountered some difficulties. But..the PC boots and otherwise behaves normally albeit some boot/shut down errors.
Things to do:
Upgrade to win 10 (its free)
Install 7th gen support bios
Re-check windows upgrades
Re-install any drivers based on new config/OS

Not a bad situation except I am currently running Win 7 OS x64 pro that was set up for an old build.

I'll report back after all is updated )

you might have trouble getting windows 10 activated now since the last free upgrade path ended on December 31st, 2017. if you still have a copy of your windows 7 key then it might still activate with that

Well I installed win10 no problem and there is just some nag message at bottom right so all good but i hated win10 so back to win 7
Win 7 is working fine with SSD, i5-7400, B150 - great in fact

Only issue was re-formatting SSD
