Here's an odd question (can I make an analog camera's signal wireless?

I live in an apartment where everybody has access to a security camera that can be accessed by anyone with a TV that will search analog TV stations. This camera looks over a door so you can see who you're about to buzz in.

I have done this. The camera comes into my apartment via a coaxial cable. Plug the cable into your TV, scan and it's the only analog station listed. A matter of fact I had this working on my PC with a simple USB analog tuner.

Here is what I'd like to do, if possible.

Take this signal, plug it into my router (very convenient) so I can view the signal on my tablet. Velcro the tablet on the wall next to the buzzer to let somebody in.

I tried a couple of things but so far I've had no luck. What I understand is this analog signal has to be converted to digital so the signal will be sent out by my router.
Analog to digital TV set-top boxes are available pretty cheap. The problem I have is there is no such thing as a coax connector to an RJ45 adapter available, that I know of. I bought a USB to an RJ45 adapter.
So, turning an analog signal digital is not a problem. Getting that signal to my router is.

My second problem is software for the tablet to view this station.
Is there such a thing as software I can download to an Android tablet that will scan for OTA channels?

Can it be done or just be happy with my TV?

Any ideas are welcome. I just thought of another approach that bypasses the router.

BTW my analog computer tuner is broke.
Also, an Actiontec ECB2500C didn't work either.
The analog to digital converter I thought of is this:

Thanks, everybody!

Solution

There may be an app for it, but also the feature may be built into Cyanogen MOD

What you want to do is nowhere near as simple as you think it is.

First off that RJ45 to USB is not useful for you at all. That is for adding a network port to a computer that doesn't have one.

To do this you need a TV tuner box to pick up the signal (or card), the signal then needs to be converted and then broadcast somehow. You literally need a PC to do that.

If I were you, I would buy the cheapest smallest LCD TV I could find and just plug the cable into it and mount it on the wall. It will see the signal and you eliminate the boatload of hardware you need to actually be able to do this.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear but it does answer my question, Thanks.

Bringing a coax cable over to where I need it won't work for me that's why I want to go wireless. I live in an apartment so I hope you don't mind me bending your ear a little more.

There is an analog TV tuner available by Hauppage. Coaxial in, USB out to a PC. I've done this before with dual monitors. Wireless monitor, maybe?
Still N.G.? like you said, not simple. I know. lol

Oh well, if there is not an easy wireless solution I won't do it. The coax is hooked up to my TV and I have a Harmony remote activity to switch inputs on the TV. It's not as convenient but I can live with it

That unit would still require the PC's software to translate it to something you can view on the screen, so no way to just plug it into a monitor.

Thanks again

The USB tuner does come with software, so no, I know it wouldn't be a "just plug it in thing" You should re-read my first post. I'm guilty of babbling while I type.

Thanks for your help. I have abandoned the idea of using my router and tablet. I don't see the software available in Android and my router will not make a good transmitter.

Thank God ha.

I'm Baaaack!

I did a little more research and with some trial and error I found a way to accomplish my goal and I thought I'd post about them. As odd as a request it is, somebody (searching) might want this information. My fault for asking a network guy a mod/hack question. I feel that the mod here may have jumped to a conclusion when he sized me up and assumed I was looking for a "plug it in" solution. I don't know a lot but I have opened a few cases and built a few systems.

I hoped to use the things I have on hand but here is what I found.

TV tuner for an analog station. This technology has gone the way of the Dou Dou. Broadcasting in analog stopped a few years ago.

I'm going to get a Hauppauge, 1191 WinTV-HVR-955Q USB TV Tuner. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DEYVXO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This will get the TV station into my computer. I have done this before at a much lower price with a Kworld USB tuner. For the price of a Hauppauge, I started to look at TV capture cards (PCI) but those are going away I guess. With all the other TV tuner options that include streaming, I can see why. Back to the Hauppauge.

I did try a portable TV and even found a transmitting antenna that fit my coax cable. The TV did say it would do analog (NTSC) stations but it didn't pick up an analog signal during the channel scan. Didn't put much stock in that one, anyway. I was just excited that if it did work it was going to be less than $70.
Anyway, with the Hauppauge putting the station in the computer and with its software to view it I was thinking a dual monitor setup. My tablet wouldn't work. Might be the Android OS, might be the HDMI. I don't know. Both I think. Even tried my Chomecast. Today I got in an automotive headrest 8" monitor and it works! Tomorrow, I'll be trying a touchscreen monitor. Between my Android emulation software and Windows 10, tablet mode, a touchscreen should work. I'll have a security camera monitor and a "central hub" for my Google Home if everything works. Cost estimated, $200

The best part. Imperative I connect the monitor wirelessly. I live in an apartment and I am in a wheelchair. Running a cable from one end of my apartment to the other is a major roadblock for me. So I have a USB/HDMI streamer coming. I'll be sending that back! The Chrome browser will stream your desktop! I already tried it and it does work with a Chromecast. Pfft, I didn't know it existed. Probably read about it and dismissed it.

Thanks.

Just for the record my answer then is still correct, you're using a PC to translate the signal from the hardware into something you can view. Yeah you can stream it to your tablet and in the end that gives you the basic thing you were looking for, but no I didn't "size you up" I worked within the confines of what you asked for.

Based on everything you wrote I clearly read that you did not want the computer in the equation. Putting the computer in, which was said in my answer, solves the problem.

If I can stream to my tablet can you mention how? I found an 8" refurb tablet with an HDMI for $30.It's a lot cheaper than a touch screen monitor, I can save a lot of money if you do that.

The tablet is in my network but not listed as a device I can stream to. I tried a Chromecast with an adapter to go down to a mini-hdmi. Still didn't work. Should I use a certain setting, get an app? Is the HDMI on a tablet only an out?

Thanks! I got that app installed and it works but the screen's orientation is off 90 degrees. The view should be in landscape mode and full screen but it's not. Pinching it won't increase the window size just the text. It is very small.

Too bad, I was having a little fun with it too. I still have to look in Splashtop's settings.

It's the tablet. It's OS is 3 generations old.
I tried a youtube video and it did the same thing. No auto rotate.

I'll root it and put the Cyanogen OS on it. Although, "auto-rotate" is probably a hardware thing. Like a gyroscope or something. Ahhh, there goes $30 bucks.
I'll use to read. lol

It may not auto rotate but I've seen a manual screen rotate button that should do the job. Good enough anyway

Auto rotate, there's an app for that. Fully automatic too. I just had to find an app that would work with my OS version.

I had to mess around inside Splashtop to use the correct resolution. Otherwise, there were black bars like watching a DVD. There is still some small side black bars but, I can live with it. The only caveat is the resolution of the computer monitor changes too. It's the monitor for my make-shift media server so I'll be turning that monitor off.

Thanks again. You saved me a ton of cash.
I still have to wait for my TV tuner to come in so we'll see then.

That link doesn't work, probably why the image tag doesn't work, photo is not public in your google account, or you need the url of the actual picture.

Any idea what might cause this?

VUZrBFT

Splashtop streams the desktop just fine. Matter of a fact you can see the Win 10 desktop background and its taskbar in this picture. When I put up the TV tuners stream to the Desktop it looks fine. When the Tablet (remote desktop) (via Splashtop) reproduces it, the screen is all black with the mouse pointer leaving its trail like in the pic.

I was chasing some kind of incompatibility but everything was fine before.
I was DL'ing different players thinking it must be missing or probably corrupted codec by the tablet.

like I said. Everything was fine before.

Yeah, I don't know why the Pics" might not show. Let me know if these links work. They were set to
community share.

I've been doing that this afternoon Uninstalled Splashtop and it's streamer.
Same results.

I tried some other screen mirroring apps and looked for software/driver for my HDMI to have an "HDMI in" that promised pc screen mirroring.
All no good.

When I made one of my pictures "public" at imgur last night somebody replied that video over a remote desktop usually doesn't work. Do you have any experience that says differently?

I have a 10" touchscreen monitor ordered and should be here Monday. An actual surveillance monitor with multi-inputs and the price wasn't too bad either. My thoughts are streaming from the Chrome browser to a Chromecast plugged into that monitor.

If that doesn't work the plan is to buy an HDMI streamer. Hook in up to my video card and stream a second monitor. That will probably have to wait till next month though.

Your thoughts?

I can still cancel that order if you have another idea.

That would work the Chromecast will show video, I've done that before.
