Would an old formatted hard drive work work a new computer?

Going to get an SSD soon just can't afford to right now.

Solution

Ok 180 is enough for Windows and a couple games (as long as they aren't too crazy). You should be fine

Hi -
Yes, assuming that the MB supports the HD interface. For example suppose your MB has only SATA-3 connections. If you have a SATA 2 drive you're good to go. If the HD is an IDE drive, then you're out of luck.

Whether or not the HD is formatted is not relevant. You can re-format the drive when you install the OS on the new machine.

Hope this helps.

Not at home right now but the motherboard is a asus strix z270. Would this work with an old drive from a Dell optiplex 270?

Depends, the Optiplex 270 was available with a few different drive configurations, and only one of them was SATA. Most likely its an old and SLOW drive and it may not connect.

You should consider a new drive, you can get a 1tb hard drive for 50 bucks these days.

Also you will need to format it and install a new copy of Windows. If you can even plug it in, don't expect it to boot up. It most likely won't.

180 GB would be an extremely old HD ... If an SSD is not in the cards for budgetary reasons, I'd suggest an SSHD

If it is a 180 GB drive that means to everybody else who doesn't speak "marketing", it's a 167 GB drive. With the recommended 15% free you are down to 142 GB ... Windows folder is good for 50 GB, main user file 10GB .. with other odds and ends including uninstall and recovery files, after 6 months you are looking at 80GB ... leaving just 62 GB for programs and games ... GTAV is 95 GB

A newish performance 7200 rpm HD boots in 21.2 seconds
SSD boots in 15.6
SSHD boots in 16.5

For gaming SSHD is 50% faster than a performance oriented HD such as the WD Black

SSHD's are a complete lie. I've used them several times in builds, and NOT once, I repeat, NOT once, have I gotten EVEN close to SSD boot times. I've looked at ways of optimizing them, but nothing worked. Just do yourself a favor and get a SSD, so much better in the long run.

Wow! My 60 GB SSD must be a miracle from heaven. Bought new with win8 launch and it still has ~30gb free after all these years ...

(running 8.1 now though and yeah, no HDD in the system)
