Hello! a friend of mine gave me a old Asus P5E3 MOBO and I just needed some ground to stand on while choosing the correct CPU to purchase. It has a LGA775 socket and relatively old. I am split down the center between the Intel core 2 duo X6800 (because of this forum) and the Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650... I though more cores and higher clock speed meant the Intel Core 2 Quad should have won. Yet CPU bench says a smidgen otherwise.. It is here... I have a Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 right now and it seems to be under powered and potentially bottle necking my GTX 670.Thanks to all who respond!

Your MB can support up to the Qx9770 https://www.asus.com/ae-en/Motherboards/P5E3/HelpDesk_CPU/

And it maybe expensive, if you will buy the x6800, make sure the BIOS is the 0403 version at least. Here is how to check the BIOS version. https://www.howtogeek.com/196916/how-to-check-your-bios-version-and-update-it/

If the MB does not have the right version, you will need use the e8500 to the BIOS first, then switch to the X6800 or other cpu.

I have a question for you, what is your budget? Do you get that old C2Q for very very cheaper? Otherwise don't buy that c2q.
I found one review: Comprising almost 10 years of Intel mainstream CPUs http://www.techspot.com/article/1039-ten-years-intel-cpu-compared/ and other one http://www.techspot.com/article/1313-intel-q6600-ten-years-later/

You can see the newer budget Pentium cpu is better than that c2q.
