WD Passport showing up, Unable to Access

So I see a lot of other posts with similarities to mine, and I have been googling answers for as long as I can remember tonight.

I have been messing with my passport in order to reach the files that are located on it, it was working about two hours ago, and I reformatted my computer, not before I put some files and cfg folders that I would need for a later time into the passport, and then I reformatted ( I did not have the Passport connected when I reformatted. )

Usually the plug and play works, but this time was different. I have tried all the tricks by going into the Device manager and everything shows up, there is not Caution sign next to it, I have disabled and re-enabled it. I have uninstalled the drivers and then restarted and then plugged it back in to a different USB port on my computer, all to no avail.

I downloaded the WD Drive Utilites set up and it sees the drive, I did a Drive Status Check and everything looks good, and a Quick Drive Test and that passed as well. It shows up EVERYWHERE but my autoplay, even the WD Drive Utility software wont let me right click on the Passport and hit "Open".

I don't know what else to do and I hear that people on Tom's Hardware are pretty smart with figuring this stuff out..

Any help would be great!

Thank you.

Solution
We get these drives in every day for recovery at my lab. Could be heads, electronics and or firmware issues. But, it could also just be a formatting issues or a defective cable too.

Hello joshb123, I am unfortunately having the same type of problems that you are having. I have tried every solution, but nothing has worked for me. Try checking your computer management screen and tell me if there is anything wrong with there. Again I have the same problem as you, so keep me posted if you figure it out, and I'll do the same :)

well if the harddisk is already damaged you save what you can save.

more over I did not say /R , i Said /F ...

/R performs /F AND full surface scan and moves files from bad sectors.

/F fixes errors on the drive that is not related to hardware damage .

In this case, it likely wouldn't even run, but you should never run chkdsk on a drive without a backup. Suggesting that it is better nothing is great, if it a last resort by the OP. What happens if they make things worse and then seek professional assistance (I see this way too much) and now they are getting their files in lost folders, no longer with their file or folder names.

It works for me all the time with external USB drives .. this problem happens from unplugging the drive while its writing , and the drive table can get corrupted or crosslinked files ..

this is very easy fix , and it worked for me just a month ago .

If it appears in Diskmanagement but he cant acces the drive , then chkdsk /F will work ..

he could loose some files yes , but they are crosslinked anyways and lost already
