Friend is selling his old computer. Crunched some numbers on price, comes out pretty close.

Spending 1200 either way new build with a 1070 or his 980 ti build.

My build is not meant for overclocking his is, liquid in cpu and GPU.

if given the same price point between them would you guys choose a 1070 air cooled build or a 980 ti Poseidon air and liquid cooled.

I'm assuming the Poseidon 980 ti can outperform an air cooled 1070.

Solution
If you're sticking to 1080p you don't need more than a 1070, but i'd recommend a 144hz monitor upgrade.
This is what you can get new with a 1070, but used prices reduce the value by about 25%.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i7-7700K 4.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($329.99 @ Amazon)
CPU Cooler: CRYORIG M9i 48.4 CFM CPU Cooler ($17.99 @ Newegg Marketplace)
Motherboard: ASRock Z270 Pro4 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($113.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory ($99.97 @ Jet)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($46.88 @ OutletPC)
Video Card:...
perfromance wise, those cards are about the same for now.
I'd pick the 1070 for larger vRAM, much lower power consumption (150w vs 250w = less heat and eventually less noise), newer architecture with few tweaks and of course will be longer supported with driver optimizations.

Post the full specs of his build.
I can get you a 1080 with $1200, I can also give your friend a more realistic selling price.

980 TI Poseidon comes with a built in water block and fans.
Edit: sorry not a waterblock the water pipe in built into the heatsink so you can run the fans and water at the same time.
Both would be i7-7700k
Mine would be z270 his z170 MB
Both evga Supernova gold rated. the one he has in 200w bigger(850W) than I planned.
I imagine I can talk him down to $1000
EKWB custom loop liquid. copper block to copper radiator
Sticking to 1080p for this build, not sure I need more than a gtx 1070. I would rather get an ssd/secondary monitor.

Pretty similar to what I was planning. Was gonna get a Rog Strix MB for the sound + 7700k for same price from Microcenter here, and downgrade that 1080 to a 1070 for an ssd.
Just waiting on a good G-Sync Monitor to come up open box/refurbished. 144hz is the plan.
Appreciate the input.
