i ve an old dell system dell optiplex 960, i ve 8bg ddr 2 ram, which definitely does nt enough for performance, currently i m using win 7 home premium, 3.0 Intel processor names as e-8400, plz tell me that what is a virtual memory and can we increase pc's overall performance ( including games ) ? if yes then how it works and what is the limit or perfect value to increase it.

Solution
virtual memory is the same as pagefile, it is ram on the hard disk, it is slow and it is not desirable

windows uses it when you don't have enough ram and need more, so you already have it but if you want more ram, add more ram

being ddr2 surely you are almost maxed out there so you need a big hardware update, ram, mainboard and cpu minimum
all virtual memory does is use a portion of the HDD as memory, by default it is on and will use what it needs to. It will decrease performance as the HDD is slower than real ram.

Although with 8GB you should not be having problems, your performance issues stem from elsewhere, CPU,GPU or HDD.
