Is my new gpu faulty, or is the psu to blame?

So, I purchased an rx480 Asus dual 8gb model, upgrading from a Radeon HD7770, I have a 600w cosair Semi modular Bronze PSU, i7-3770 3.4ghz cpu, when I try to play games with the new card, they run fine for about ten mins (sometimes 20-60) I've ran various games on various settings, doom on full ultra, others on low or medium, during the 20-60min mark on games that have a heavy load on the GPu I get artifacts and my games sometimes crash, however games such as overwatch, heroes of the storm all work fine on full settings, GPu temp and speeds etc are all fine, as well as cpu ones, sorry for poor format I'm on mobile

usually when the psu has problems you get different type of errors

if you have another psu to try, i would try to run with another psu to see if there is differences

also be sure you removed the old drivers and put new ones for the new gpu

if you can't find a reason for the problems, i would consider rma the gpu to be more sure

The dual series model, and yes it was already overclocked I shall try lowering The overclock when I get back on my pc soon, as for psu, i don't have another psu to try it out with :/

I had a lot of similar issues with my RX480 - It turned out to be the drivers.

I suggest that you use DDU to uninstall the current drivers and then install Crimson 16.7.2 - After that I had no more issues, apparently a lot of people had this issue. For me it was in Gears of War where the game would just freeze out of nowhere.

Give it a go with the old drivers, let me know if you need any further assistance doing so!

That's one of the exact problems I was having, however I have run ddu and then installed that version of crimson and still got artifacts :/ like I said though, not on all games, most blizzard games are fine, skyrim SE gets artifacting, killing floor 2 is generally okay, could it simply be a matter of waiting till a new driver is out?

It 'could' be - But I mean the games aren't brand new anymore so I generally doubt it.

Try to set it back to default clock and see if the issue continues - For me it ran best on stock clocks + 16.7.2

Like you said, the games that it doesn't happen on are pretty light on the GPU too, if after stock clocks and ensuring you're on the above mentioned drivers and it still happens, i'd suggest seeing if you can RMA the GPU or just take it back to the retailer.

Hmm, have you tried any benchmarks? like Unigine Heaven or Firestrike? Would be curious to see if those cause artifacts too.

Im really sorry, I was rather tired last night, and miss read the driver version you posted, i used DDU and installed the version of the drivers you said to try out, benchmark testesd with Heaven and it was fine, also, i tried fallout 4 on ultra, fine until i spoke to preston, then artifacts on the screen, afterwards it was okay again, even in areas with high draw distances / ones that were more graphically demanding o.o

I will try reseating it now, it was fine for a good 2-3 hours this morning, playing games such as doom on ultra, and killing floor 2, then when i came home, launched doom, played for a minuite, the fps dropped drastically, then my pc shut off

that is a different symptom

sudden shutdowns can be related to psu itself but your mainboard can't be ruled out here

it sounds like a good time to check all the pc, then reseat gpu or test that gpu on another pc, see if it behaves differently than on your pc, the psu, if you have another, try to play with another psu to discard voltage instability problems on it

Sadly i don't have another psu, however i can get round my friends house on saturday to test the gpu in his, guess that will show what the culprit is, is it possible its my motherboard? I do have a rather small mobo, its a gigabyte ga h6 1m

Ive heard that the fact the GPU comes pre overclocked can be the issue here, someone on a forum on here had described the exact same problems i had, either game crashes / system shut off on gpu intensive games, but no all the time, they stated once they undervolted the gpu slightly and the other clock speeds to stock values it was fine, however i do not know what the stock values for the card are, can anyone help me to test this before going to friends on saturday?

to undervolt and modify those values, well use the stock values offered by the reference card offered by amd

in this case the cpu should be 1,120MHz

the ram should be 7gigabits, 7000mhz iirc

the core voltage should be 1.1volts but i am not sure

now, if you have to do all this to get your brand new gpu to work, why buy a overclocked gpu in the first place? a situation like this would make me want to return the card and stop fighting with it, but that is my personal opinion

more about the undervolt you want to try

Thank you very much, i have changed the values in wattman and my system seems to be stable now, just managed to play games for an hour with no crashing issues, will still test in another machine tomorrow, but for the mean time everything seems okay :)

So after almost a month, the problems have came back :( sometimes i can be fine all day, full load etc on gpu, gaming all day long, other times i get issues like this https://youtu.be/VbKf-J6mPa4 (i uploaded this, look in bottom left of screen and you will see the flashes of light / artefacts) and in rare occasions game crashes and system lock ups / blue screen :( im guessing i should just RMA the card?
